Gary D. Steinbach

 Gary D. Steinbach, age 68, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Friday, April 16, 2010, at his residence in Yankton.

Memorial services will be 2:00 PM, Friday, April 23, 2010, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Oliver Omanson officiating.

Gary Steinbach was born April 10, 1942, to Vernon and Grace (Lukhart) Steinbach in Marshalltown, Iowa. Gary grew up in Marshalltown and graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1960. Shortly after high school, Gary enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving his country during the Vietnam War. After the war, he moved to California where he worked as a shoe salesman for four years until moving to Yankton in 1968. For many years, Gary worked for various local car dealerships in Yankton in the parts department. He married Donna Dougherty on April 8, 1984, in Yankton. Gary worked for the City of Yankton as a jailer for four years and also as an EMT for Yankton County EMS for 19 years.

He was a life member of the Yankton VFW, where he served on the honor guard. He loved bowling, hunting, fishing, his dogs, spending time with his friends and family, and was a great storyteller.

Survivors include his wife, Donna of Yankton; four step-children, Shelly Grosshuesch of Yankton, Shaun Habeger of Yankton, Galen Slagle of Vermillion, South Dakota, and Michael Slagle of Rapid City, South Dakota; four grandchildren, Kellee Ashes, Robert Grosshuesch, Justin Grosshuesch, and Aidan Slagle; great granddaughter, Kiana Irvin; and special cousin, Muriel "Midge" Hall of Elk Point, South Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Richard and Charles Steinbach.

I never knew Gary well.  However, his older brother, Dick, was a good friend of my older brother Jim. 

Sorry we won't see Gary at the reunion.
