Leslie James (Modesitt)

Leslie Carol (James) Modesitt, 68, a lifelong resident of Martinsville, passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at the St. Francis Hospital in Mooresville after battling cancer for many years. She was born January 26, 1947 to the late Walter Kelso “Bud” James and Barbara Ruth (Sandy) James.

Leslie was a 1965 graduate of Martinsville High School. She attended Hanover College and received her Bachelor’s Degree in 1969. In 1971 she received her Master’s Degree from Indiana University. She retired in 2004 from MSD of Martinsville after teaching 2nd graders at Green Township Elementary School for 35 years with passion, skill and affection.

Survivors are her husband Lewis A. “Lou” Modesitt, whom she married on November 1, 1987; sister, Suzanne Warthen, and sister and brother-in-law, Cathy and William Agan; nieces, Whitney Witsken, and Katie Warthen; nephews, Matthew and James Agan; great-niece and great-nephew, Brittany Witsken and Miles Chatwin.

After her retirement, Leslie became increasingly interested in selling books along with her husband through antique malls and shows traveling frequently to the east coast where they looked for rare books. She became an avid children’s book collector.

Leslie was a member of Tri Kappa, and she will be remembered for her love of IU basketball and the Indy 500 race. She and Lou loved to camp close to the many places their book searches took them and both enjoyed nature and the adventure it brought.

Leslie will always be remembered for her kindness, thoughtfulness and love that she showed to all of her family and friends. She embraced her nieces and nephews as if they were her own children helping out wherever she could. She will be sadly missed.

Funeral services will be 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at the Costin Funeral Chapel with Rev. Eric Kersey officiating. Visitation will be at Costin Funeral Chapel, on Monday, May 18, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Burial will be at New South Park Cemetery in Martinsville.
