Lifelong Martinsville resident, Karla Joyce (Burleigh) Dunn, age 77, died unexpectedly at 6:59 PM on Thursday, May 2nd, 2024, at the Franciscan Health Hospital in Indianapolis. Karla was the last surviving child born to Andrew Wayne and Mina Temperance (Hacker) Burleigh. The youngest of nine children, Karla was born on Friday, February 14th, 1947, in Martinsville, Indiana.
She graduated with the class of 1965 from Martinsville High School and went on to attend Indiana Business College and I.U.P.U.I, receiving a business degree. Karla was a longtime member of River Valley Christian Church in Martinsville, where she enjoyed attending Bible study.
She retired in 2010 from South Central Indiana REMC in Martinsville after several years of employment in customer service. Prior to working at REMC, Karla worked at Action Title in Martinsville, American Utilities Construction Company in Bloomington, Railroad Men's Federal Savings & Loan (now Huntington Bank) in Indianapolis and the Indiana State Department of Health.
When she wasn't at work, Karla enjoyed reading, crocheting, water skiing, ice skating, roller skating, and writing poetry. After retirement, she especially took pleasure in traveling and cherished time spent with family and friends. She will be lovingly remembered for her large and genuine smile, her infectious laugh and big heart along with her favorite quote, "Love you more."
She leaves behind several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews that she loved like her very own, as well as bonus children whom she adored including, Tami Dittemore (husband, Andy) of Martinsville, Barbie Williams of Monrovia, IN, Carmen Atkins-Smith (husband, Brent) of Danville, IN, JD Richardson (wife, Heather) of Martinsville and Mina Messamore (husband, Ronald) of Martinsville; fifteen bonus grandchildren, six bonus great grandchildren and her beloved dog, Lovey Dove.
Along with her parents, Karla was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas A. Dunn on October 5th, 2016, whom she married on January 14th, 2012; three brothers, Jack, Roger, and Ted Burleigh and five sisters, Laverna Stevens, Jean Baughn, Sharon Diane Burleigh, Pat Meredith, and Anice Haymaker.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, from 4:00-8:00 pm and Thursday, May 9th, one hour prior to service time at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center. Rev. Kevin Able will officiate a service celebrating Karla's life at 11:00 am Thursday at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest at Nebo Memorial Park Cemetery in Martinsville.
