Marilee Potter Kelly, 71, formerly of Martinsville, In., died peacefully at her home in North Chesterfield, Va. on July 30, 2018, after a hard-fought battle with brain cancer.
Marilee is survived by her husband, James “Jim” Kelly; children, Mechel Long Andrade (Fredy) and Kelly Long Hurson (Lionel); brother, Norman Potter (Rose); grandchildren, César Hurson, Louis Hurson, Justin Hurson, and Nonie Hurson; stepdaughters, Raven Ellington (William), Anna Kelly, and Laura Beth Kelly; ex-husband, Donald Long; and many extended family members. She was preceded in death by her son, Erik Long; parents, George and Hazel Potter; and siblings, Larry Potter and Nancy Zelahy.
Marilee retired from the Chesterfield County (VA) Circuit Court in 2011. She previously worked for the Morgan County Clerk’s Office in Martinsville and Herff Jones in Indianapolis. She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, and loyal friend. She loved traveling, gardening, sewing, and interior decorating. She had a “sweet spirit” (in the words of her pastor) and a smile that would light up the room. She was energetic and passionate with every endeavor and never unkind to anyone, regardless of the circumstances.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, August 6th from 10:00 am – 12:00 noon at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center in Martinsville. All are welcome to attend a service celebrating her life beginning at 12:00 noon at the funeral home on Monday. She will be laid to rest following the service in New South Park Cemetery beside her son, Erik.
