Celeste Caffey was the brightest star of my 4 years living in Martinsville. I visited her in Houston, San Francisco and Boston after H.S. and was saddened to see her pass. She attended Lynchburg College and graduated with a BA in Sociology in 1982. She worked with mentally handicapped persons in Houston, San Francisco and Boston. She was a great example of someone who thrived even though she faced her own physical handicaps. Her spirit will always be one of the highlights of my journey. She was a friend not afraid of others who were different than conventional norms. She was extremely wise and giving for her years. She was born on April 11, 1960 and passed on January 24, 1990.

Thanks for getting this information for us, Terry. I remember Celeste as a smiling, friendly and sweet girl. Other than seeing her in classes, I missed the privilege of getting to know her as well as you did. Perhaps other classmates would like to leave tribute messages for her also...

Knowing Celeste will always be the equivalent of having an Angel as my best friend in high school. Having moved from Savannah to Martinsville in junior high she arrived on the scene in my freshman english class. Incredible genuine person from day one. It was like the twilight zone, moving from an island in savannah, lake in the back yard, salt marsh and a dock across the street to the little factory town of martinsville. She gave me access to smith mountain lake, water skiing and fishing like savannah. What she really gave this kid, was a genuine friendship through a very tough time.

Celeste, Mark Crabtree and myself pal'd around a lot. An oasis in the little ole town of martinsville. Her willings to give and help others exist as a true testimony of someone who understood the true nature of God, the universe and what the true gifts of life are.
