Died on 9 April 2008 in Trowbridge, Sutter County, California of throat cancer
San Francisco Chronicle: April 10, 2008
(04-09) 21:39 PDT -- Loren Hawley, one of the greatest rugby players in University of California history, died Saturday in Trowbridge (Sutter County) of throat cancer. He was 65.
Known as "King of the Lineouts" for his acrobatic leaping skills on inbound plays, Mr. Hawley - at 6-foot-4 was considered one of the best American-born rugby players ever. He played for the Golden Bears from 1962 through '65 and was a letterman on the football team in 1961, '63 and '64.
Mr. Hawley played for Cal rugby coach Miles "Doc" Hudson and helped the Bears to an undefeated record against American competition in 1965. Also that year, Mr. Hawley was integral in Cal compiling a 5-2-2 mark during a tour of Australia and New Zealand, considered unfathomable for a touring U.S. side.
In his later years, despite being diagnosed with throat cancer that left him unable to speak, Mr. Hawley was a fixture at Cal rugby games. Since 2006, he enjoyed watching his son, Colin Hawley, play for the Bears. Another son, Garrett, played for the San Francisco Golden Gate under-23 side.
Mr. Hawley is survived by his two sons. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Friday at Ullrey Memorial Chapel, 817 Almond St., Yuba City (Sutter County). Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 1390 Franklin Rd., Yuba City.
