Vernon was born in Iola, Kansas to Vernon L. and Edith (Turley) Thornbrugh.

He grew up in Kansas until moving to McCook, Nebraska in the 6th grade. He graduated from McCook High School in 1960 and entered the Army where he served in Germany.

On September 9. 1962, he was united in marriage to Garrah Lea Smith and she spent a year in Germany with him. They moved to Denver after leaving the Army and Vernon was always in the meat industry. He became a USDA Meat Inspector in the late 1960s. This job took him to many parts of the country including Colorado, Wisconsin and Oregon before settling in Crete, Nebraska in 1979. Vernon's favorite past time was Fishing and coaching little league baseball.
