Richard Weiss - Class Of 1967

Richard “Rich” L. Weiss, 73, of Kearney died June 28, 2022 at the C.H.I. Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, July 6, 2022 at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney with Fr. Art Faesser officiating. Burial will follow the service at Kearney Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the Nebraska National Guard Funeral Honors Team, Kearney American Legion Post #52, and Kearney V.F.W. Post #759. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, July 5, 2022 at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Kearney American Legion or Mid-Nebraska Community Action Food Bank. Rich was born April 22, 1949 in McCook, Nebraska to Reuben “Duke” and Vesta “Fern” (Harshfield) Weiss. He grew up in McCook and graduated in 1967 from McCook High School. He then attended McCook Junior College for two years, where he met the love of his life, Loretta Schumer. He enlisted in the Army in 1970, serving his country from Germany before returning home in 1972. He then attended Kearney State College for two more years, earning a bachelor’s in Business. He married his love Loretta on August 18, 1973 in Wallace, Nebraska. They were blessed with three boys, Jake, Luke, and Nate. The couple moved to Kearney, where Rich managed the Eagles Club for over 30 years. He was a very active commander in chief at the Kearney American Legion Post #52. Rich enjoyed calling Bingo and visiting with the patrons at both clubs and made many lasting friendships throughout the years. He then worked at Mid-Nebraska Community Action managing the food bank and the commodities program until retiring in 2016 to care for Loretta. He loved spending time on the golf course with family and friends. Rich will be remembered for his keen sense of humor, contagious smile, cooking wonderful food, being quite the card player, and never losing at board games. He took great pride and joy in attending all of his grandchildren’s activities and events. Rich is survived by his sons, Jake and Tiffany Weiss, Luke and Darcie Weiss, Nate Weiss; grandchildren, Alexander, Maxton, Owen, Ariana, Calliope, Michael, and Makenzie Weiss all of Kearney; sister, Linda Fox of Oberlin, KS, Debbie Conroy of Omaha, NE; brother-in-law, Don Weskamp of North Platte, NE; sister-in-law, Colleen Schumer of Wallace, NE; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Rich was preceded in death by his wife; sister, Judy Weskamp; and four brothers in law.
