In Memory

Helen Alvarez (Vermeer)

24 June 2008

Dear Classmates -

I was informed today that Helen Alvarez was diagnosed in late May with a brain tumor. Oddly enough, this occured the same day as Senator Kennedy was diagnosed and with the same type of tumor! Helen was operated on the following day...and was to recieve chemotherapy this week (6/23/08); however, last Thursday night she had a seizure and was hospitalized. The tumor had grown back, bigger than it was originally, so they did another operation this past Saturday morning. At this time, Helen still has not regained consciousness! Please pray for Helen's full recovery. If you wish further information, please email me at your convenience.

Update: Sadly, Helen passed away on 25 June 2008. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

I was so fortunate to have been Helen's roommate at FSU and I miss her terribly.

Helen is with her Dad now and her brother, Hector, who was taken by cancer in April, 2005. Karen and her mother are doing as well as can be expected...just so sad. Helen's children, Lauren a rising senior in hs, and Billy, a rising sophomore in hs are precious and seem to have gotten Helen's positive attitude and outlook on life. Please pray for them as high school is such a difficult growing time and moms are so important as they seem to be the biggest advocates...even during the rough times.

Tomorrow, Wed, July 2, at 11am, there will be a service in Clarksville, MD. The address for St. Louis Catholic Church is: 12500 Rt. 108 (Clarksville Pike); Clarksville, MD 21029

My thoughts and prayers are with Helen's family. She will be dearly missed.
