Tom Brennan

Mr. Joseph Thomas (Tom) Brennan, 77, a Northland resident of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away the evening of February 8, 2020 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron, Missouri.

Tom was born in McPherson, Kansas to Joseph T. and Maxine Brennan on February 11, 1942.  Tom’s father passed away in 1951.  Tom was then raised as a son by Leroy Sellberg, Maxine’s second husband.Tom was predeceased by a sister, Sandra Brennan in 1959. 

Tom married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Jeanne McIntosh on September 29, 1962.  Tom and Shirley were 1960 graduates of McPherson High School.He worked for Co-op, which became Farmland Industries in 1966, before entering the military.

Tom is a veteran of the Vietnam War (1966-1967).He was a member of the Armed Forces, serving in the US Army. After serving in Vietnam, he finished his time in the military at Ft. Bragg in Fayetteville, NC.  Upon finishing his service, Tom and Shirley returned to McPherson where he resumed working at Farmland Industries.He took a job within the company that required a move to Kansas City, Missouri in 1972.  By this time, Tom and Shirley had two daughters, Tonya and Angie.

Tom furthered his education by earning an Associate’s degree from Maple Woods Community College. He worked for Farmland Industries for 25 years.  He then became a co-owner of Environmental Systems, a waste water treatment system, with a business partner, Jerry Weaver.  He remained there until his retirement.

Tom was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2012.  Shirley cared for him in their home until 2017 when he moved to Stonecrest in the Northland.  He then moved to Cameron in 2018.  He was later diagnosed with Lewy Body with Dementia.

Tom was a sweet, most gentle soul and everyone loved him.  He was smart, funny and easy going, but he could also be stubborn!  He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and brother, and he was a good friend to many.  He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife Shirley, his daughters Tonya Ferretti (Pete), Angie Hopper (David), his grandchildren, Demetria Ferretti and Sophia Ferretti, Taylor Swindler (Brady), Ashley Hopper and Alexa Hopper.  He is also survived by his sister, Rhonda Wild (Flint).

All services will be held on Friday, February 14, 2020.  Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Meyers Northland Chapel in Parkville, where a memorial service celebrating Tom’s life will commence at 1:00 p.m.  A formal funeral procession will depart the funeral home at 1:45 p.m. for Leavenworth National Cemetery, where military honors will be presented and a committal service will be held at 2:30 p.m.
