Edinboro honors Newsome's memory with scholarship

Jacqueline Newsome was a single mother raising three children when she enrolled at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 2007.

Balancing motherhood and her studies in criminal justice, she also took on a student job at the university’s Bessemer Center in Meadville, her hometown.

Last year, those accomplishments earned her the university’s Student Employee of the Year Award.

Newsome, 35, died Feb. 4 from injuries she sustained in a two-vehicle crash in Venango.

To honor her memory — and her successes — university officials and Newsome’s family, friends, classmates and colleagues gathered Friday at the Bessemer Center to announce the establishment of the Jacqueline Christine Newsome Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship, officials said, will help support other single mothers pursuing higher education degrees at Edinboro University.

A daughter of William L. and the Rev. Berta Lynn Rose Newsome of United Faith Fellowship Church, Newsome was also an active member of the church, serving as a pastor aide and church school teacher, as well as on the church’s Usher Board, Stewardess Board and Praise Team.

Her children, Demarius, Diandra and Kiashiah Newsome, continue to reside in Meadville.
