I remember going to Cub Scout meetings with Ron and his Brother Dan Mathern.  We were a handful for the Den Mother who also happened to be Ron and Dan's Mother as well.

There wasn't much of an opportunity to wrestle Ron or Dan to the ground without the other Brother coming to his aid; as such, we acted accordingly and didn't mess with Ron or Dan very much. Those Brothers had each other's back and we knew it.

I remember Ron's smile, ear to ear, that just reached out to you and said, "relax, it will be ok, I'm here and everything will be fine."   Ron could run like a Cheetah and throw a perfect spiral. He didn't boast, brag or draw attention to his athletic ability -- he would just smile: We who knew him were envious, Ron  was ... "kewl".

Ron's Brother, Dan Mathern, went on to become a US Navy P-3 Flight Engineer and a razor sharp, steely eyed Fire Fighting pilot in the aftermath.  I know Ron is  there in the "Right Seat", Dan's silent co-pilot on every flight -- looking out for his Brother.  If you look close enough, you can see that grin, he lets Dan know that "It will be ok, I'm here and everything will be fine."
