I'm grateful to intelligent people. That doesn't mean educated. That doesn't mean intellectual. I mean really intelligent. What black old people used to call 'mother wit' means intelligence that you had in your mother's womb. That's what you rely on. You know what's right to do. ~Maya Angelou~

KAREN KING-ARIBISALA (N.D.)

Karen Ann King-Aribisala is a Guyanese-born novelist who was raised and currently resides in Nigeria. She left Guyana as a young child, moving with her parents to Nigeria around the time of the Nigerian Civil war (1967-1970).  Her father introduced her to books at an early age, and the two would discuss literature, poetry and the Bible. He encouraged her to write as well, and she began composing her own stories around the age of eight. Karen King-Aribisala began her education at the Ibadan International School in Nigeria. She received an international education in Guyana, Barbados, Italy and at the London Academy for the Dramatic Arts in England. She met her Nigerian husband during her time studying abroad in Italy as a teenager.
King-Aribisala’s first book of short stories Our Wife and Other Stories (1991) won the Commonwealth Writer’s Prize for Best First Book, Africa Region. In 2008 her third book, Hangman’s Game, won another Commonwealth Writer’s Prize for Best Book. Her most popular work to date, Hangman’s Game observes parallels in the slavery imposed by General Sani Abacha’s military regime in 1980s Nigeria and the conditions that led to the Demerara Slave Revolt in 1823 Guyana. King-Aribisala has published several short stories in literary journals including Wasafiri, Presence Africaine, The Griot and Bim. Her novel Kicking Tongues was published in 1988. She is the recipient of several awards and grants, including two James Michener Fellowships for Creative Writing at the University of Miami in Florida, a Ford Foundation Grant, British Council Grants, and a grant from the Goethe Institute. She lives with her husband in Nigeria where she is a professor of English at the University of Lagos.

The works must be conceived with fire in the soul but executed with clinical coolness. My characters have undergone the same process of simplification as the colors. Now that they have been simplified, they appear more human and alive than if they had been represented in all their details. I try to apply colors like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music. Throughout the time in which I am working on a canvas I can feel how I am beginning to love it, with that love which is born of slow comprehension.

BRENDA JOYSMITH ART GALLERY

Brenda Joysmith is more than an artist. All her paintings have a story to tell. "Drawing from careful observation of Black people in their ordinary routines, I select a moment that is particularly expressive, or best characterizes my basic idea. Then I work to create a painting that is both meaningful and enjoyable," explains Brenda. Starting with a realistic portrayal of her subject, Brenda's paintings are also impressionistic, interpreting an experience through the subjective use of color and other visual cues. Bright colors that "turn up the volume" are used to express the spirit of children playing ring games or enjoying a parade. Muted marine colors with soft edges and hazy, blurred figures in the distance best describe the calm mood of a couple with introspective expressions looking out over a bay.
Brenda grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, in the 1950s and 1960s with four brothers and four sisters. Much of her work is indeed Southern and nostalgic. Now she has returned to her native Memphis, after living for 25 years in California. She says, "The last 25 years in California have expanded my view of the diversity of Black people. Our experience varies by region, generation, religion or socio-economic status. However, most of our cultural roots take us back to the South. I want to remind us of the strengths and positive substance of that experience, connecting with the universal and the timeless." It is the viewer's recognition of these elements and the emotional response to these memories that bring the works of art to life. In 1984 she self-published her first print portfolio of six paintings titled Tapestry. Notably, it is the Tapestry Collection of six limited edition prints.
Ms. Joysmith has won numerous awards over the years and her work appears in many prestigious galleries and museums. Over the years, Brenda's art work has received valued exposure through electronic media as it has been displayed on the sets of both network television series (The Cosby Show, A Different World, Amen, Family Matters, Sinbad, In The Heat Of The Night, Sparks, Good News, The Gregory Hines Show, The Jamie Foxx Show, Malcolm and Eddie, The Hughleys, and Cosby) and feature films (Philadelphia, Lethal Weapon III, Ghost Dad, House Party II, Jason's Lyric, A Family Thing, A Preacher's Wife, Love and Basketball, Music of the Heart, All That Glitters, and Kingdom Come). Brenda's original pastel paintings are included in many prestigious individual, corporate, and organization collections; including, Maya Angelou, the Honorable Willie Brown, Roberta Flack, The William King Collection, Dr. Catherine Lowe, Dr. Calvin McLarin, Oprah Winfrey, Alpha Kappa Alpha National Sorority, Chicago's E H S Bethany Hospital Birthing Unit, The Colgate-Palmolive Company Permanent Collection, Fillmore Fell Corporation, MBNA, National Council of Negro Women, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), San Francisco Art Commission, San Francisco's Skilled Mental Health Nursing Center, Sigma Gamma Rho National Sorority, The Wimmer Companies, and the U.S. Embassy Ambassador's residence in Lesotho, South Africa.

Just a little humor to close out "Womens History Month". I pray that you ladies and gentlemen have enjoyed the chosen selection of women, who have made history on both national and international levels. Hopefully, the "Womens History Trivia Tests" were as equally satisfying and inspiring. Have you ever heard of the saying, "March comes in like a Lion and goes out like a Lamb"? In case you missed it, I began this month with the images of Carol Keys, the newly elected Miss BTW and Frederica Jones, the newly elected Student Council President, who promised "Unity in 70". Carol and Frederica  exemplified the stature of two Lioness, capable of accomplishing each endeavor presented before them. We remember Brenda as the meek and mild Lamb, with talents to stir up and encourage unity, through her drawings and paintings. Hence my choices of historical achievers, whom I thought represented the phrase for the month of March, in like a Lion and out like a Lamb.
There are many women within the "Class of 70", who have accomplished historical acknowledgements and achievements. Use this website to inform the masses who simply read and those who read and post messages. It doesn't have to be "Womens History Month". Gentlemen, you don't have to wait for Father's Day. We're still struggling for that "Class Unity" promised back in 70. It's not too late, to make it happen. Every little action creates an effect: We are all interconnected. A true community is not just about being geographically close to someone or part of the same social web network. It's about feeling connected and responsible for what happens. Humanity is our ultimate community, and everyone plays a crucial role. If I said it once, I'll say it again: We have the power to change everything (Yehuda Berg).

I trust that when people meet, we meet for a transcendent reason, and that the challenges we face in life are always lessons that serve our soul's growth. Try to see the good in others. When you're tempted to judge someone, make an effort to see their goodness. Your willingness to look for the best in people will subconsciously bring it forth. ~Marianne Williamson~

It's only when we truly know and understand that we have a limited time on earth - and that we have no way of knowing when our time is up, we will then begin to live each day to the fullest, as if it was the only one we had. Learn to get in touch with the silence within yourself, and know that everything in life has purpose. There are no mistakes, no coincidences, all events are blessings given to us to learn from.

I think a universal feeling that we all share is that live experiences create indelible memories. Swaying to new beats, hearing old favorites, and drinking expensive beer are ageless pastimes. Every day is sort of a jigsaw puzzle. You have to make sure that you're putting the most important things first. If you can't see an example of what you could be, you really aren't going to have that extra incentive to break through any types of barriers. ~Julia Hartz~

A belated official Bday Anniversary to you Patricia! It's not too late, because you may be one of the many individuals who choose to celebrate all month. President FDR once said; Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort. Our happiness lies in the joy gifted upon you, while blessings of mercy and grace were extended to you, inorder to achieve this cherished milestone. I pray that you had an excellent bday celebration. As you know, I'm just getting back from my whirlwind tour of Memphis, and once again, I extend my condolences to you. I'm just grateful that I had your number, to send you a text Monday morning.

Spring has finally sprung, and if we’re fortunate, the weather will continue to reflect that! Here's hoping that your skys remain bright and clear and the thrill of creative effort will extend itself to your garden for an abundant season of growing. I've found a website that I think would be helpful to your newly adopted hobby. It's  https://www.almanac.com/gardening/growing-guides.  Enjoy this planting season, as you venture out on faith once again. Your harvest this year should exceed the last. I wish you a Michael Fields Jr kind of growing season. Having surpassed a milestone, you, spring and your garden will be On The Move....enjoy and stay safe my friend....

I also enjoyed the information you shared at the end. I laughed and laughed when I saw the actual words to one of my childhood games. Arthur Godfrey, Liberace - who knew???? I was just saying something when we played. If someone had offered me a million dollars, I would have forfeited it!! Thanks for the memories!!

SMALL STRAWS IN A SOFT WIND
by Marsha Burns

The most valuable and effective currency you have is prayer. The time you spend in My presence will produce the greatest and most lasting benefits. Seek for that which no man can take away, and no worldly system can devalue. Be rich in righteousness and good works. Matthew 6:18-21 Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

 T H O U G H T   F O R   C O N S I D E R A T I O N

You can't hire someone to practice for you.

Commit yourself to a mighty purpose.

Never forget the three powerful resources you always have available to you:

love, prayer, and forgiveness.

Remember that life's big changes rarely give advance warning.

Philippians 1:1-4 New International Version

1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all God’s holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 I thank my God every time I remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy.

Greetings to all members of the "Warrior Class of 1970". I'm writing to you this Palm Sunday, which is also called Passion Sunday, to make another request of you all. While reflecting upon the example put forth by the Apostle Paul, as he and Timothy were visiting the church at Philippi, a shared passion for the members of our class is my reason for making such an open  request. Paul wrote to encourage the Christians at Philippi, to live joyfully in every circumstance. Even if we don't consider ourselves as bible scholars, most of us know the events or have heard the story which took place during this upcoming week, many, many years ago. Once upon a time, when we weren't afraid or distracted from reaching out to one another publicly on this forum, we requested prayers of one another. Regardless of the situation or circumstances, dedicated "Prayer Warriors" would collectively respond, individually or in writings.
Therefore, on this day, my simple request is that we offer words of prayer for the following individuals in particular, and any other members of our class, whom we know are in need. Pray for Willie Taylor, as he continues to convalesce from a fall which required surgery. I spoke with him a few days ago, and his spirits remain uplifted. I ran across Ronald Johnson, out shopping last weekend during a visit to Memphis. Although he's adjusting to the transition of his mother, his facial countenance, spoke to me in volumns. Please continue prayers of behalf of Ronald, Faye and Larry Milligan. If you are so encouraged, call Willie, Ronald and the Milligan's or send them a getwell card or a card of encouragement.

We all know that there's no specific timeframe for grieving, nor the physical healing of our aged bodies. However, the message of Palm Sunday points to a Savior who is willing and able to save us from any catastrophe, and he shows us how to best conduct ourselves when emotions run high. Palm Sunday teaches us to be grateful to Christ for loving us. It calls on us to seek to love God in return. Palm Sunday teaches us also that the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ is a story of love. This day teaches us that we should be careful of our friendships. When faced with difficulties, we may not have any of our friends out there to defend us. COVID-19 viruses, inflation, murders, shootings, burglaries and wars between nations have caused our emotions to run high these day, but surely we are never too busy, distracted, or overwhelmed for us to bring our concerns to him on behalf of our classmates. This is important for us to remember during moments of crisis, whether personal or global.
Should you agree with me, I simply ask that the former "Prayer Warriors" REACTIVATE, and begin anew, on this website. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made know unto God (Phillipians 4:6).
I've been using the quotes of Paul, so I'll end with another; Philippians 2:5 King James Version 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus...stay safe my friends....be blessed....

Thank you Kenneth. Thank you for reminding me that are love for one another has been sealed through the shed blood of Jesus and this is reason enough to look forward and to each other for support. Our paths have crossed through nothing we have done other than follow the paths that were laid before us.  Sister and brother warriors I offer up a prayer for the classmates mentioned and those who I have not spoken to this year. I know that we have all been overwhelmed by some personal loss or other tragedy over the past two years. I recently lost a very close friend of 42 years and my hear is heavy.  I pray and believe that your/our hearts will be  lightened by knowing that if we ask, our Father in Heaven loves us enoug to give us peace beyond our own understanding. God Bless.

"Foods that Improve Blood Circulation & Reduce the Risk of Heart Attacks"

~Stephanie Holmes~

Prevention is always the best medicine, and your diet is a key factor in maintaining a healthy, well-functioning body, especially when it comes to blood circulation. Here are the 5 foods recommended by doctors and nutritionists to improve the quality of your blood, keep your veins and arteries  in tip-top shape, and improve blood circulation throughout the body.

Garlic

Rich in allicin, garlic helps dilate the blood vessels, which improves blood circulation and regulates blood pressure.

Beets

Beets are rich in dietary nitrates, which can be converted to nitric oxide by the body, thus promoting vessel relaxation and regulating blood pressure. The effects provide better blood, oxygen and nutrient flow throughout the body. It's best to consume beets raw, as they contain more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants than when cooked.

Walnuts

Walnuts are rich in I-arginine, an amino acid that promotes vasodilation (widening the blood vessels). They also maintain your cholesterol at a healthy level while decreasing blood pressure.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that prevents the oxidation of bad cholesterol. It also reduces the risk of atherosclerosis (a disease that occurs when plaque builds up in your arteries) and, consequently, cardiovascular disease.

Ginger

Ginger is a potent anti-inflammatory food and a natural booster for blood circulation. This is due to the presence of an enzyme that helps with the dissolution of fibrin, a protein that accumulates in the veins and is responsible for blood clotting.

SMALL STRAWS IN A SOFT WIND by Marsha Burns

In a dream I was walking through a forest, and a man approached me and gave me a container of rare herbs and spices that he had gathered. I was delighted and inspired, so I processed the herbs and spices he had given me and made them into an ointment, which I was able to share with others. I believe the interpretation of the dream is whatever Jesus gives us is a gift that we can both internalize and share.1 Timothy 6:17-19 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

TUESDAY PRAYER RECEIVED FROM JAMES STONE

Taking care of myself used to be at the bottom of my list, but I'm all about wellness. Your morning sets up the success of your day. I use my first hour awake for my morning routine of breakfast and meditation to prepare myself. So many people wake up and immediately check text messages, emails, and social media. Your energy is a barometer for your passion. You can't value others until you value yourself.
