New Research Shows Surprising Relationship

Between Coffee And Heart Health

  Katie Lenhardt

The American College of Cardiology just made coffee lovers very happy by releasing the results of its three-part study showing that consuming two to three cups of java per day is associated with lowered risk of heart disease and increased life longevity. Researchers studied data collected from over 500,000 people who were followed over a 10-year period and found that coffee consumption in moderation can be beneficial to the heart along with having other healthful properties. The first study followed 382,535 people with no known heart disease to see how consuming coffee affected the development of cardiovascular issues and stroke. It showed that two to three daily cups of Joe lowered the risk of heart failure and coronary heart disease by 10% to 15%, with the risk of heart-related death or stroke lower than those participants who kept it to one cup per day.

The second study focused on over 34,000 people who had existing cardiovascular disease, which is usually the group that health care providers worry might have issues with the stimulant effects of coffee. The study found that drinking two to three cups of coffee per day was associated with a lowered risk of death in patients with arrhythmia, and participants with atrial fibrillation (AFib) were "20% less likely to die than non-coffee drinkers."

Despite the benefits, the senior author of the study said people should likely avoid increasing coffee intake over the most beneficial two to three cups daily.

Coffee Has Many Health Benefits

The third portion of the study released by The American College of Cardiology breaks down the relationship between coffee and cardiovascular disease based on the type of coffee being consumed, whether it was instant, ground, caffeinated, or decaf. Researchers found that two to three cups of either instant or ground coffee were linked to a lowered risk of blocked arteries, heart failure, stroke, and arrhythmias. Regarding cardiovascular benefits, the study found that caffeinated coffee was preferred over decaf.

Healthline reports that the caffeinated beverages, one of which is consumed daily by 80% of the world's population, often get a bad wrap for their stimulating effects that can actually be more beneficial than once believed. Aside from waking you up in the morning, the caffeine found in coffee can boost your metabolism, improve gut health, and reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases, like type 2 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and some cancers. Caffeinated coffee is also linked to a 16% to 18% lowered risk of heart disease in men and women who consume one to four beverages daily.

Additional studies of a wider swath of the general population are needed to provide more conclusive results, and people should take their individual preferences and health history into account when consuming coffee.

I have made the choices that work best for me. I know I cannot please everyone, and that's fine. Everybody's got a job to do, and I do mine as best I can. I'm different, and my manner invites questions. I'm never afraid to answer. It seems we're always in transition and that it's more about trends than it is about what's meaningful.

 "Warriors On The Move"....Contributions Welcome! ! !

During a recent visit to Memphis, the true "Warrior Spirit" was on full display at the Famous Four Way Grill. Retired Valedictorian Margie McRae, Pharmacist Bernice Moss and Professor Joycelyn Lacy, boldly sang our classic "Fight Song", after dining with Danielle, the daughter of Bernice, and also Margie's sisters, Linda and Barbara. Blessed to attend the 90th birth anniversary of a dear relative, it appears that Margie joyously included her desire to see ole friends during her visit, who are also considered family. Many of us haven't seen Bernice since graduation, so a "21 Gun Salute" is in order for each of you. Albert Schweitzer couldn't have said it better; "In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit". Thank you ladies for rekindling our inner spirit, with your vision of family togetherness.... Togetherness is essential for our faith to grow and relationships to thrive.

Hebrews 10:24-25 Easy-to-Read Version   Help Each Other Be Strong

24 We should think about each other to see how we can encourage each other to show love and do good works. 25 We must not quit meeting together, as some are doing. No, we need to keep on encouraging each other. This becomes more and more important as you see the Day getting closer.

With sadness of heart, I acknowledge the transition of Mrs. Harriet Pippin, the mother of our own Bonnie Pippin Mills. Please keep Bonnie and her family within your prayers. Additional information will be passed on when available.

I'm not an early bird at all. Ideally, on Saturday morning I'd allow myself a lovely lie-in. 10:45 would be just right. I was always spiritual, even as a child. I was taught to pray, show gratitude. We had an attitude of gratitude. Even if life was ugly, bad or sad - we prayed. The best way to survive life is - never fret over what you don't get. There's a bigger plan for you.

Hello Classmates
As we know this is a twofold milestone year for us. One, most of us celebrate our 70th birthday and second we graduated in 1970. A beautiful thing I have recognized is that a feeling of camaraderie has been reestablished through this medium. So with that being said are there any plans for a celebration being planned by the anyone. It would really be a shame to let this milestone year go by without any form of recognition. If there are plans being made please share with the entire class. I for one would love to participate.

There's only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that's your own self. Every man who knows how to read has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the ways in which he exists, to make his life full, significant and interesting. Uncontrolled, the hunger and thirst after God may become an obstacle, cutting off the soul from what it desires. If a man would travel far along the mystic road, he must learn to desire God intensely but in stillness, passively and yet with all his heart and mind and strength. There's only one effectively redemptive sacrifice, the sacrifice of self-will to make room for the knowledge of God.

The world has always been uncertain. This is the nature of the world. Sometimes you need to speak up about what you're standing for. The art of leadership is not to spend your time measuring, evaluating. It's all about selecting the person. And if you believe you selected the right person, then you give that person the freedom, the authority, the delegation to innovate and to lead with some very simple measure.

~Pierre Nanterme~

Good morning Marsha and Larry. You've generated a proficient question for the benefit of our classmates. Hopefully, we'll receive additional replies from other classmates. As to my knowledge, nothing has been expressed privately nor openly concerning any upcoming celebrations. The only question I've received, was concerning the occasion of a 55th Class Reunion. However, a "Leadership" void presently exists within our class. We're only Alumnus of BTW. With the dissolution of the last "Class Reunion Committee", the official "1970 Alumni Committee" and it's officers for planning purposes, were also dissolved.

All we have remaining is this original website. I stand to be corrected if I'm inaccurate and any additional related information is welcomed. Here's a question for the members of the last reunion committee. Has anyone entertained the thought of re-establishing officers as functional members for a "Class of 1970 Alumni Committee"??? Without a leadership for planning purposes, we're stagnant.... Our website has a forum for discussion.....let's use it to ask additional questions for sustained dialog....

The most precious gift we can offer others is our presence.

~ Thich Nhat Hanh~ Vietnamese - Clergyman

While sharing a pew with James Stone, we heard the phrase, "The Gift of Presence", mentioned by Rev. Dr. Rosalyn R. Nichols, while attending the funeral of Mrs. Harriet Pippin. Jackie Sawyer Casey and Harry Taylor were also in attendence and surely, they heard it too. Pastor Nichols mentioned it, when sharing loving remarks about the mentorship offered by Mrs. Pippen, at an early age in her ministry. Initially, it sounded a little strange to me, but after considerable thought, "The Gift of Presence", is something we should all share, as often as possible. As Marsha mentioned on a previous post, many of us will reach the anniversary milestone age of 70 years during the course of 2022. We're not getting any younger and many individuals are transitioning daily.
Presence defined, relates to the fact or condition of being present, the part of space within one's immediate vicinity, one that is present: such as the actual person or thing that is present, something present of a visible or concrete nature. Mrs. Pippin poured a little concrete onto the path of life traveled by Dr. Rosalyn over the years. Something we should be doing among ourselves. I'm not a bona fide minister, like other of our classmates, but like you, I also read the Bible and the New International Version of 1 Peter 2:1 states; "Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind." If we were to become like-minded individuals in this effort, "The Gift of Presence" would convert the essence of our associations.
Further research concerning my understanding of the phrase revealed a book written by Caroline Welch entitled "The Gift of Presence: A Mindfulness Guide for Women". The Gift of Presence guides readers in developing four innate capacities we all possess that will allow us to become more resilient and centered in our lives--even when life is throwing all that it has at us; Presence: the ability to remain firmly in the present moment; to be fully aware of what's happening as it's happening. Purpose: the personal meaning that gets us going and gives direction to our lives. Pivoting: an openness to change that allows you to switch direction if that is what is needed. Pacing: the awareness that it is impossible to do everything we want or need to do all at once; the ability to take life one step at a time. Although specified as a "Mindfulness Guide for Women", the four innate capacities of Presence, Purpose, Pivoting and Pacing should also apply to us fellows. I acknowledge this due to an attempt to provide my own "Gift of Presence" over these last two weeks.

As life was throwing all that it had at me, the deaths of Ms. Alberta Bowdery (sister of Edward Bowdery) and Mrs. Harriet Pippin provoked a desire to be physically present inorder to offer condolences to Edward and Bonnie. I wasn't the only classmate to attend the services, however we were of the opinion that our physical presence made a difference to each individual and their families. Covid-19 precautions were enforced and our efforts have been rewarded as a result. (Proverbs 29:25 King James Version; "The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe")
American psychologist, author, teacher and proponent of  meditation Tara Brach once stated; "If we knew just how powerfully our thoughts, words, and actions affected the hearts of those around us, we’d reach out and join hands again and again". As you review the obituary of Mrs. Harriet Pippin and the images of a few classmates who extended their "Gift of Presence" to Bonnie, during the scheduled services, consider the power of your thoughts, words and actions. As you develop your present, consider how you can affect the hearts of classmates and those around you by reaching out for their hands, again and again, to offer your personal "Gift of Presence". Let us continue to lift the Bowdery and Pippin families up in prayer. Cards and phone calls are still welcomed for your support and encouragement....

Friday after the funeral for Mrs. Pippin. Visitation at the E. H. Ford Funeral Mortuary on Elvis Presley for the son of a former Defense Depot Memphis co-worker....Unknown to me, his son Gregory Monger, just happened to be Jackie's nephew.....The "Gift of Presence" matters....

If in our daily life we can smile,

if we can be peaceful and happy,

not only we,

but everyone will profit from it.

This is the most basic kind of peace work.

No one really has a bad life. Not even a bad day. Just bad moments. Sometimes you have to disconnect to stay connected. Remember the old days when you had eye contact during a conversation? When everyone wasn't looking down at a device in their hands? We've become so focused on that tiny screen that we forget the big picture, the people right in front of us. No matter how I feel, I get up, dress up, and show up for life. When I do, the day always serves up more than I could have hoped for. Each day truly is a slice of heaven. Some days the slices are just smaller than others. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.

Good Morning Kenneth and fellow classmates,

The Alumni  Class of 1970 is resting behind some unexpected ordeals covid being one of them but we are not asleep.  We are currently seeking and considering an extravaganza that will warm the hearts of our fellow classmates. We are not trying to at this point, to create reunion activitie that would have been a part of our 50th class reunion but to start the camaraderie of classmates again and then go from there. August is our target date and information about the get together will be given soon with the help of Kenneth Davis.

Thank you for your patiences and concern which is a great motivator !

I think looking after your mental and physical health is key to confidence, because they go hand in hand. I never try to change it too much. Having a healthy body and healthy mind is always something I think about. I try to always eat a balanced diet. Eating right is a natural defense against the sun. Sweet potatoes, dark chocolate, pomegranates, leafy greens, almonds, and teas all help against the sun. It's about doing you and not worrying too much about other things. Only worry about the things that are really worth worrying about.

4 Ways Your Eyes Are Telling You That Your Brain's in Trouble
Luisa Colón © Provided by Best Life

While the eyes are known for being expressive—think "puppy dog eyes" or "sparkling with happiness"—they can also reveal a lot about what's going on with our health. Not only do our eyes enable us to see approximately 200 degrees in all directions and distinguish millions of colors, but thanks to their direct link to our brains, they can provide important clues to our cognitive functioning. "Over 70 percent of your brain is involved with vision, and 80 percent of all sensory information goes through your eyes, so your eyes and retinal health intrinsically hold clues for neurological function," says Robert Layman, MD, a practicing optometrist and president of the American Optometric Association (AOA). "In many neurological diseases, the eyes are often the first site to manifest a disorder."

Blurry vision

Blurry vision is caused by a number of different issues, and many of them are easily addressed. Maybe you need a new eyeglasses prescription, or your desk is right by an air conditioner that blows air into your eyes all day, drying them out. But other reasons for blurry vision are far more serious. "Blurred vision can result from many causes, including uncorrected refractive errors, binocular vision dysfunction, ocular and systemic diseases, and sight- or life-threatening conditions such as tumors of the brain," warns Layman. Another serious potential cause for blurry vision is multiple sclerosis (MS). "The disease causes inflammation along the nerve that connects your eyes to your brain, called the optic nerve," according to WebMD. "That causes a condition called optic neuritis, which can give you blurry sight, loss of color vision, and pain when you move your eyes." This can often occur in only one eye, and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and feeling stiff or weak.

Double vision

It's a cartoon cliché that when you hit your head, you see stars. But in real life, as well, visual symptoms are a common sign of a brain injury. "Ninety percent of patients with traumatic brain injuries, such as a concussion, will suffer visual symptoms," Layman explains. "Symptoms are not always noticeable, but can include double vision, poor eye tracking ability, difficulty with shifting gaze quickly from one point to another, blurred near vision, glare or light sensitivity, and eye strain." Layman says it's important to get checked out by a medical professional when you sustain any type of head trauma, no matter how minor it may seem. "Even mild brain injuries can have a drastic impact on your vision, and only a trained eye care specialist can thoroughly diagnose and treat vision impairments," he explains.

Loss of vision

"The eyes contain elements of the peripheral nervous system, with eye movement based on the firing and wiring of cranial nerves," says Layman. "So they contain a great deal of information in regard to systemic and neurological health." In other words, your eyes can tell you a lot about the health of your whole body—including your brain. When loss of vision occurs, it can signal a problem like a detached retina, according to the Moffitt Cancer Center—but it could also be a symptom of a brain tumor: "If a brain tumor exerts enough pressure on the optic nerve, blindness can occur," their experts say. "For many patients, the loss of vision is gradual, beginning with blurry vision, double vision or an increasing blind spot. As the tumor grows, however, it will compress the optic nerve, resulting in greater vision loss."

Decreased peripheral vision

When we see something out of the corner of our eye, we are utilizing our peripheral vision. And certain vision changes, including decreased peripheral vision, may be a sign of Alzheimer's disease. "Many individuals with Alzheimer's disease may have a critical vision impairment where there may be nothing physically wrong with their eyes, but the brain is not fully processing visual information," Kendra Farrow, Research and Training Associate with the National Research and Training Center (NRTC) at Mississippi State University, told the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA). "The brain cannot interpret what is being seen," she explains. Farrow describes this condition as being similar to "looking through a tube" and being unable to see not just things that are on the side of your vision, but also on the top or bottom. If you experience changes in your peripheral vision or other changes in your eyesight that cause concern, make an appointment to speak with your doctor as soon as possible.

Arriving at one goal is the starting point to another. The self is not something ready-made, but something in continuous formation, through choice of action.
