SMALL STRAWS IN A SOFT WIND by Marsha Burns

October 29, 2024: In a dream I was preparing for a wedding. It was never clear who was getting married, but the preparations were not in a building, but rather in a beautiful mountain meadow with a stream of water running through it and beautiful wildflowers. People from all over the countryside were beginning to gather in the excitement of preparation. I was trying to come up with an estimate of the amount of food that would be necessary for the event. Revelation 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.

  T H O U G H T   F O R   C O N S I D E R A T I O N
TODAY'S WORD - PREPARATION

True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost. Life is like a tennis game. You can't win without serving. From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life. You learn about equality in history and civics, but you find out life is not really like that. We must love ourselves, our old and or young, our women as well as our men. I know I could never forgive myself if I elected to live without humane purpose, without trying to help the poor and unfortunate, without recognizing that perhaps the purest joy in life comes with trying to help others. My humanity, in common with all of God's children, gives the greatest flight to my full range of my possibilities. I have tried to keep on with my striving because this is the only hope I have of ever achieving anything worthwhile and lasting.
I wish more of us could understand that our increasing isolation, no matter how much it seems to express pride and self-affirmation, is not the answer to our problems. Rather, the answer is a revival of our ancient commitment to God, who rules over all the peoples of the world and exalts no one over any other, and to the moral and spiritual values which were once legendary in America. We must reach out our hand in friendship both to those who would befriend us and those who would be our enemy. I take the good with the bad, and I try to face them both with as much calm and dignity as I can muster. Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome. Start where you are, use what you have.
I have always tried to be true to myself, to pick those battles I felt were important. My ultimate responsibility is to myself. I could never be anything else. Clothes and manners do not make the man; but when he is made, they greatly improve his appearance. Regardless of how you feel inside, always try to look like a winner. One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation. If I were to say, 'God, why me?' about the bad things, then I should have said, 'God, why me?' about the good things that happened in my life. You've got to get to the stage in life where going for it is more important than winning or losing. A wise person decides slowly but abides by these decisions.

TODAY'S WORDS - JUST A HABIT

I want to experience as much as I can in this very short life that we have. I wish everyone could wake up with a birdie on your shoulder, reminding them that this could be your last day. As you get older, you see how rapidly the years and decades fly by, so I would encourage anyone, no matter the age, to seize their life and be fully present. Savor every moment and go after your dreams. Be relentless in pursuing your happiness.
Doubt is probably the biggest obstacle to overcome. Once you rise above doubt, you are on your way to success. For joy, I live by the mantra of surrounding yourself with people who make your life better... people who enhance your life and motivate you to be the best version of yourself. It's not always easy, but I've had to make a conscious effort to remove people who are a lot of work and drain my energy...you know, those energy suckers we each have in our lives. It was a hard lesson to learn, but eventually I had to come to grips with the fact that I cannot solve everyone's problems and lead them to a happy, fulfilled life. They have to figure that out on their own.
I believe that a healthy lifestyle isn't just a regular exercise routine or your eating habits, but a synergy of a healthy mind and body. To fuel my body, I am relentless about never eating anything that isn't of this Earth. I have no interest in putting stuff in my body that's made in a lab. Movement is vital. Whether it's running, cross training, hiking with the dogs, or walking, I am constantly active. I try not to eat processed foods, well, ever. If it comes from a lab or a factory, I don't want it. I'm so crazy now about 'organic' and 'fresh' and stuff that's 'free range.' I encourage people to pick up small habits like taking a walk after meals... we've become way too sedentary. Just move! I change my training probably every two months. The only thing that stays consistent is that I've become a pretty psychotic runner.

This Is How You Really Should Be Cleaning Your Ears

—No Q-Tips Required

By James Hubbard, MD

Medically reviewed by Jessica Wu, MD

https://www.thehealthy.com/

If you’ve ever heard about how dangerous it is to use a Q-tip to clean your ears, we’re sorry to say that the rumors are true. According to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, using a cotton swab can actually push earwax deeper into your ear canal, and can even cause punctured ear drums and hearing loss. Still, if you’re experiencing wax buildup in your ears, it can be pretty uncomfortable—so we have a safer solution for how to clean your ears.

Water can serve as a great resource for cleaning out your ears—as long as you use it properly. It’s the irrigation that’s a great way to remove any foreign body or wax buildup in the ear.

How to clean ears safely

⦁ Pour clean, lukewarm water into a bowl. (Using water that’s too hot or cold can stimulate the auditory nerve—which also controls your balance—and cause dizziness.) Add a few drops of household-strength hydrogen peroxide if you wish.

⦁ Hold a towel or another bowl under the affected ear to catch the water as it comes out.

⦁ Using the water in the bowl, fill up a bulb syringe, a medical syringe without the needle, or a plastic bag or bottle with a pinhole in the bottom.

⦁ With the arm that’s opposite the ear (for example, your left arm if you’re irrigating your right ear), reach around the back of your head, grab your ear, and pull back and slightly upward.

⦁ Squeeze the bag, bulb, or whatever you’re using so the water squirts into the ear canal with steady pressure.

⦁ You’re finished when the object or glob of wax comes out. Stop if the irrigation hasn’t worked within about five minutes or if you have pain or dizziness. You can try again in a few hours. By that time, the earwax, if that’s your problem, should be even softer.

⦁ After you’re done, put a couple of drops of alcohol (mixed with peroxide if you want) in your ear to help dry up excess water.

TODAY'S WORDS - A PLACE OF TRUSTING

Life is too precious to be a spectator sport. We are no longer merely fans, rooting for the winning team. We are the team. We are the grown-ups. Whatever you believe is true, now is the time to give your respectful, inquisitive, and compassionate self to it. Could we chose to amend the rules of the game to create a society that values people over profits, life over pollution, mutual care over guns and prisons, vision over dysfunction?
Once we’re above the survival level, the difference between prosperity and poverty lies simply in our degree of gratitude. We shift from comparing ourselves to others to considering our real needs and desires. We shift from “more” to “enough” and ultimately get more of what money can’t buy. Priceless. The only real asset you have is your time. The hours of your life. We no longer live life. We consume it. As you take your eyes off the false prize (of more, better, and different stuff), you put them on the real prizes: friends, family, sharing, caring, learning, meeting challenges, intimacy, rest, and being present, connected, and respected. In other words, those best things in life that are free. Like all things natural, building this wealth takes time, attention, patience, and reciprocity (that volleying of giving and receiving that builds relationships). Put your life in service to your values rather than putting your time in service to money.
Happiness increases heart health, strengthens the immune system, combats stress, reduces aches and pains, reduces chronic illness, and lengthens our lives. If you live for having it all, what you have is never enough. In an environment of more is better, “enough” is like the horizon—always receding. You lose the ability to identify that point of sufficiency at which you can choose to stop. This is a psychological cul-de-sac, an invisible catch-22 of the consumer myth of more. If more is better, then what I have is not enough. When you have Enough, you have everything you need. There's nothing extra to weigh you down, distract, or distress you. Enough is a fearless place. A trusting place. An honest and self-observant place ... To let go of clutter, then, is not deprivation; it's lightening up and opening up space and time for something new and wonderful to happen. Values are the chosen limits that allow our lives to deepen rather than dissipate.

TODAY'S WORDS - VICTIM OF CIRCUMSTANCES

There are three constants in life... change, choice and principles. Beginners are many; finishers are few. Our ultimate freedom is the right and power to decide how anybody or anything outside ourselves will affect us. While we cannot always choose what happens to us, we can choose our responses. Humility is the mother of all virtues, courage the father, integrity the child and wisdom the grandchild. Where you are headed is more important than how fast you are going. Rather than always focusing on what's urgent, learn to focus on what is really important. Anything less than a conscious commitment to the important is an unconscious commitment to the unimportant.
Accountability breeds response-ability. Seek to understand before you seek to be understood. Effective people are not problem-minded; they're opportunity minded. They feed opportunities and starve problems. When you show deep empathy toward others, their defensive energy goes down, and positive energy replaces it. That's when you can get more creative in solving problems. It takes humility to seek feedback. It takes wisdom to understand it, analyze it and appropriately act on it. As you care less about what people think of you, you will care more about what others think of themselves. Make small commitments and keep them. Be a light, not a judge. Be a model, not a critic. Be a part of the solution, not the problem. Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.
I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions. To begin with the end in mind means to start with a clear understanding of your destination. It means to know where you're going so that you better understand where you are now and so that the steps you take are always in the right direction. To achieve goals you've never achieved before, you need to start doing things you've never done before. We immediately become more effective when we decide to change ourselves rather than asking things to change for us. When we succumb to believing that we are victims of our circumstances and yield to the plight of determinism, we lose hope, we lose drive, and we settle into resignation and stagnation. You can learn great things from your mistakes when you aren’t busy denying them. Anyone can count the seeds of an apple. Who can count the apples in a seed?

Stephen Covey

THURMOND REDMOND

Time has been transformed, and we have changed; it has advanced and set us in motion; it has unveiled its face, inspiring us with bewilderment and exhilaration. March on. Do not tarry. To go forward, is to move toward perfection. March on, and fear not the thorns, or the sharp stones on life's path. Your daily life is your temple and your religion. When you enter into it, take with you, your all. To be able to look back upon one's life in satisfaction, is to live twice.

TODAY'S WORDS - PICK YOURSELF UP

When people question your integrity, when people question who you are from afar, when they've never had a conversation with you, and don't know the time and effort you've put into your communities, but then you're kind of this thug, this out-of-control player, that makes no sense to me. I'm from Columbia, S.C., and my family is very religious. We'd go to church and Sunday school, and we always had to dress up. I enjoyed that.
It's a huge, huge pressure that so many people depend on you. The type of player I am, and people look at me to come out and perform a certain way. Not being able to play on the biggest stage of the season, it's frustrating. One thing I wanted to do was not be frustrated about it and figure out what I can do to change and better myself on the court. I wanted to prove people wrong who didn't think I could play at this level. I also wanted to take care of my family. You're so close to losing a loved one ... the ultimate goal is to be a better daddy, a better son, a better teammate. It was a chance to play against the best players in the world. Mentally and physically, I don't think I was ready, but I was ready to take on the challenge. I want to give myself the best chance to finish on my own terms. My reward is just to be a better man.
The problem is that I've never been a player who complained or let people know how bad things were. One thing I can say - and anybody can say from any team I've ever played on - is that when I get out there, I'm going to play as hard as I possibly can, whether it's on one leg or two legs or whatever. Some of these parents in the basketball world want to be paid for their kids and want to be given this and given that. That's not what this is supposed to be. This is supposed to be about getting rewarded off of your hard work. When we can reach out as coaches and give back to these kids and touch them with the knowledge and with the thought process to give them the opportunity to do something that they dream about doing, that's what God put us here for.
I've taken my bumps and bruises, but you've got to be willing to get knocked down and pick yourself up. You can't get discouraged. At 40, your body and your mind doesn't do the same thing as it used to do. You can't lose sight of what your goals are. Maturity is everything. I'm a player that has sat, literally, on every side of the good, of the bad, of the ugly. I'm continuing to figure it out every single year: Life is a challenge, and the ones that succeed in life are the tough-minded ones that are not willing to accept failure. Going from a situation where you're the best player on the court every time to the fourth-best player in your position, it humbled me.

We can't wait around for Superman to come in here and save the town, save the team. It's up to us to get it done.

SMALL STRAWS IN A SOFT WIND by Marsha Burns

November 3, 2024: Beloved, I want you to take care of your spirit life like you would care for an infant child. You need to feed it, protect and nurture it. You need to keep it alive and growing. When you neglect it, it will wither and die and become a thing of the past, a dim memory. Your spirit life is your future, your destiny, and your eternity. John 17:3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

  T H O U G H T   F O R   C O N S I D E R A T I O N
TODAYS WORDS - YOUR SPIRIT LIFE

Whatever adventure you are into, whatever you are doing, your attention should be on your spirit. The only way one can really understand what we are is by knowing yourself. The source of joy is within yourself. Unless and until you seek yourself, you cannot seek God. You cannot intellectualize God, you cannot, He is beyond your intellect, you cannot understand Him through your intellect. If you have to understand Him you have to become the spirit. You have to develop that peace of mind within yourself by which you can become the witness of yourself first. You should be able to witness yourself and see what are the things, which are putting you down. Reality is only possible if you are in the realm of joy. When you know yourself, you are surprised that what is the greatest thing for you is to love and to be loved.
We have to get awakened to the fact that in recent decades, great destruction has been caused to our moral values as a result of our children, parents and families, getting influenced by the chaotic conditions of modern times. One has to know what is the ultimate goal of our life. The ultimate goal of our evolution is to become the Spirit, which is the reflection of God Almighty in our heart. That is self identity and also self knowledge. Also, one becomes one with the all-pervading Divine power of love. Our awareness is enlightened by the Spirit and Divine vibrations start flowing through our central nervous system enlightening our being. You have to get something that is beyond, something special, something unique that happens to you, by which you become one with the whole. If you start putting your attention to Spirit, the sweetness of the Spirit itself will make the whole thing very sweet and beautiful.
To allow your Spirit to manifest, you have to understand Its nature. Spirit can never be aggressive, can never dominate. It respects the freedom of another person because It's a free being. You are not the sum of your physical, mental, emotional life, but you are designed for the spiritual. The whole design of the human being is created to enjoy your spiritual life and not the material life. This is the basic thing human beings don't understand and that's why, if they knew this fundamental thing, they would seek their spirit first and they would not seek other things. Spirit is the source of peace. It is the source of joy. It is not a duality of happiness and unhappiness, but singular joy.

TODAY'S WORDS - EAT CAKE

I was 12 years old when I had my first job, delivering packages. I never thought about being famous. Having nine brothers and sisters, you have to stand out. In order to get on the stage with me and Shawn and Marlon and Keenan and Kim, you have to be funny. We're not going to let you in the conversation. And for my family, comedically, that was the key to a lot of the humor. The less food, the more time to talk, the more to talk about. But my kids, my brothers' kids - they think about trying to top what we did.
My kids have a competitive drive I never had growing up. It's hard for me to play this loving, supportive father/husband/ friend on TV but be the guy in life that is telling everyone, 'I can't. I have to work.' All the family gatherings, I'm too tired, or I can't because it conflicts with work... My greatest production is my children. Then, to see my grandbabies is the gravy. I have seven grandkids. I've been missing recitals and graduations. To me, it's just not worth it. There is a better way to live life. You have to look yourself in the eye and ask, 'Who are you?' It can't be all about work.
Junior is such a great guy. He's the new and improved model. It's a beautiful thing. That's what you train your children to do. He's an inspiration to his brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews who say it's too hard living up to the family name. Some struggle is healthy. If you can embrace it rather than be angry, you can use it as your pilot light. I tried to walk away from standup, but it's been my therapy - my way of expressing anger, disappointments, and fears and celebrating my hopes. It helps to regulate my thought process. Nobody can stop you but you. And shame on you if you're the one who stops yourself. The beautiful thing about having family that has diabetes is knowing what not to do. I got an uncle that thinks insulin is supposed to enable him to eat cake.

SMALL STRAWS IN A SOFT WIND by Marsha Burns

November 5, 2024: Release all of your worries and concerns to Me. If you could have done anything about them, you would have. Settle into a place of quiet serenity where you can heal from past wounds and uncertainty. I am your strength and your courage to move into the next phase of existence, says the Lord. Philippians 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

   T H O U G H T   F O R   C O N S I D E R A T I O N
TODAY'S WORDS - QUIET SERENITY

You simply will not be the same person two months from now after consciously giving thanks each day for the abundance that exists in your life. And you will have set in motion an ancient spiritual law: the more you have and are grateful for, the more will be given you. Both abundance and lack exist simultaneously in our lives, as parallel realities. It is always our conscious choice which secret garden we will tend... when we choose not to focus on what is missing from our lives but are grateful for the abundance that's present - love, health, family, friends, work, the joys of nature and personal pursuits that bring us pleasure - the wasteland of illusion falls away and we experience Heaven on earth.
We can stop waiting for life to become perfect and start working with what we’ve got to make it as satisfying as we can. We can accept, bless, give thanks, and get going. Today, we can begin to call forth the riches from our everyday life. Today we can move from lack to abundance. Usually, when the distractions of daily life deplete our energy, the first thing we eliminate is the thing, is the thing we need the most: quiet, reflective time. Time to dream, time to contemplate what's working and what's not, so that we can make changes for the better. Always remember, it's simply not an adventure worth telling if there aren't any dragons. Become aware that you already possess all the inner wisdom, strength, and creativity needed to make your dreams come true. Our deepest wishes are whispers of our authentic selves. We must learn to respect them. We must learn to listen.
To find this greater truth about God, Spirit, and the sacred, we must often set aside the limiting impressions from our childhood. In many instances these images of fear only serve to hold us back in our search for authentic spirituality...Open up your mind and heart to a concept of Spirit who looks out for us, loves us, sheds light on our path, and wants nothing less for us than unconditional happiness. Every day we’re given chances to embrace the new. Today is not the day you quit. Nor is it the day you cry. Today you know that you have all the passion and wisdom to find that quiet center of solace, serenity and strength necessary to create and sustain an authentic life. Life is not made up of minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, or years, but of moments. You must experience each one before you can appreciate it.

TODAY'S WORDS - STILL SMALL VOICE WITHIN YOU

Whatever our background, culture or race, what rewards us most powerfully and consistently are the most deceptively simple abilities of all: the ability to be kind. Restraint offers a space between intention and action and the opportunity to protect others from actions or reactions that should exist only in your imagination. How we feel about our own self, how well or little we know our own self, whether we feel alive inside, largely determine the quality of the time we spend alone, as well as the quality of the relationships we have with other people. Your attitude to life is far more important in determining your happiness than your money, appearance, social status or talent. Happiness--like love--is itself an attitude. Love teaches you to care for others. It also gives you your best chance to grow up.
Happiness can come in a single moment. And in a single moment it can go again. But a single moment does not create it. Happiness is created through countless choices made and then made again throughout a lifetime. You are its host as well as its guest. You give it form, shape, individuality, texture, tone. And what it allows you to give can change your world. Happiness can be stillness. But it isn't still. It wraps, enchants, heals, consoles, soothes, delights, calms, inspires and connects. It is on your face and in your body. It is in your life and being. Imagine the world we would live in if we dared to see all of life as sacred - unconditionally. LISTEN to the small, quiet voice within that only ever guides you with love and compassion. Let yourself receive the inspiration of beauty and kindness. Let yourself rediscover peace in your heart. And, from that secure place, meet whatever comes.

Managing Blood Pressure? Eating These 2 Fruits Might Lower Mortality Risk, New Study Says
By Meaghan Cameron, MS
Updated on Mar. 29, 2024

https://www.thehealthy.com/

These two fruity favorites are known for specific benefits. Now doctors point to another win that's good for the heart, and possibly a longer life. One is known for its heart-healthy potassium, and the other is said to keep the doctor away overall. Now doctors from three universities in China have found that apples and bananas may add years to the lives of patients diagnosed with hypertension.
A study published in the March 2024 peer-reviewed Frontiers in Nutrition journal aimed to assess how fruit consumption affected the lifespans of individuals with high blood pressure. The research team analyzed data collected between 2003 and 2006 from the U.S.-based National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), selecting medical metrics gathered on individuals who’d been diagnosed with hypertension. The researchers identified 2,480 patients with the condition who also completed a survey about their typical eating habits. Further data collected 10 years later revealed that 658 of the participants had subsequently passed away.
Based upon their analysis, the researchers discovered that on average, the subjects who ate apples or bananas three to six times per week lived longer. And while eating one of these fruits several times a week correlated with a longer life, those who incorporated both fruits fared even better. “Individuals who consume apples or bananas three to six times per week have a reduced risk of all-cause mortality by 40%,” concluded the researchers, even after adjusting for certain variables like sex, age, race, education level, and various health conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Interestingly, people who ate pears, grapes, and pineapples did not appear to experience the same benefits. The researchers theorize that the fiber in both fruits might play a role in their protective benefits, as fiber has been shown to help manage high blood pressure. However, this doesn’t explain why pears wouldn’t work, since they are also high in fiber. The skin of the apple and its unique polyphenol makeup could be reasons, the researchers added.
As for bananas, they contain several vitamins, minerals, and protective compounds along with a good dose of fiber. Plus, bananas are high in potassium, which has been shown to lower blood pressure. (Bananas have also been shown to benefit gut health, which research has found yields systemic physiological effects.) Since relatively few fruits were examined in this study, the researchers suggest not dismissing others for a heart-healthy diet. “It is important to note that the conclusions of this study are specific to a particular population and cohort,” they said. “Therefore, they should not be used to dismiss the health benefits of other fruits.”
If You Don’t Eat a Banana Every Day, This Might Convince You to Start
The doctors added that this doesn’t present a green light for endless fruit consumption, noting that “increasing consumption beyond this range (three to six per week) did not provide additional advantages.” Even though fruit provides natural sugars, it still affects blood glucose and other health measurables. The bottom line many health and nutrition professionals would advise is to eat a diverse diet that’s rich in colorful plants. For hypertension, produce items like avocados, strawberries and tomatoes have also been associated with lower blood pressures.

TODAY'S WORDS - ADJUSTMENTS

Difficulties are not interruptions to our journey; they are part of it, as if they're part of the weave of the cloth of our lives. They weave in and become an essential part of the whole. Because the more challenges we face, the more capable we realize we are and the less there is to fear. It was tough for me at school... trying to blend in and get along with other kids. I was an oddity, and kids are scared of things they don't understand. I was bullied and picked on because I was so different to everyone else, and I definitely didn't believe or even know I was fabulous back then. But those hard times made me everything I am today. It's all water under the bridge now, but being bullied and going through adversity definitely made me stronger.
You can never control other people. You can only control yourself. I have definitely learned that. You should aspire to a level of personal excellence - to be the best you can be. You should aspire to have the richest life you can get in terms of fulfillment, happiness and peace. Everyone has an opinion; the question is which opinions are actually relevant to your journey, and which are just static in the air? Without aspirations for a better existence, you're stuck in the mud and going nowhere. Live honestly to a higher note. Life is too short. Life is a series of adjustments; You can make changes along the way, but if you don't start moving forward, you'll never get anywhere! Live life on your own path. Everybody's got something different. You can't keep up with all those people, so you better keep up with yourself. For me it's always God, family, and then my work.
