TODAY'S WORDS - SAVOR EVERY MOMENT

Whatever it is your heart desires, please go for it, it's yours to have. You've got to believe. Never be afraid to dream. You never know what life has in store for you, but I believe there are certain things one is meant to go through. The sad truth is that opportunity doesn't knock twice. You can put things off until tomorrow but tomorrow may never come. Where will you be a few years down the line. Will it be everything you dreamed of. We seal our fate with the choices we take, but don't give a second thought to the chances we take. It's not so much for me where you come from, who you are, what race you are. We're just human beings that are still a work in progress and there's a lot that we've got to overcome, so that we can all be equal.
It's important to me that the words that I put out there into the cosmos, into the universe, be empowering or somehow positive for people that hear them or maybe be cathartic if someone is having a relationship that's having a tough time. There are so many difficult things we're living through in the world today, so many horrible events, but we cannot let them stop us. No matter what happens, I feel you must move forward with optimism and not get totally sideswiped. We do have the power to save one another... Having felt people's love and support firsthand through difficult moments in my life makes me feel it's our responsibility to help one another. I'd like them to see that those things that set us apart or make us different can be wonderful contributions to the world around us. I'd like them to see that size and color are irrelevant to the dreams we envision for ourselves. And I'd also love for them to see that life is a journey, and every step of the way, we can learn something and become stronger and wiser.
As an entertainer, my job is to help people have fun. You want your fans to like what you do, because it's coming from your heart and soul. You write it, you produce this thing. It's like your baby. My favorite process is writing, from day one. The songs I have written throughout the years were a real great opportunity for me to communicate, because I think that's my prime objective on this planet.
For I've finally realized that I could be infinitely better than before, definitely stronger. I'll face whatever comes my way, I'll savor each moment of the day, love as many people as I can along the way. Help someone who's given up, even if it's just to raise my eyes and pray. Music has been one of the most beautiful things in my life and will always be a very big part of who I am and what I do. You don't have to give up who you are to be successful just because you're different.

WELCOME TO
SMOOTH
 CONTEMPORARY JAZZ

At the end of the day, who I really and truly am is a little girl who loved to play the piano. Speaking purely from a musical standpoint, I think I am a great performer. Music is one of the most powerful things the world has to offer. No matter what race or religion or nationality or sexual orientation or gender that you are, it has the power to unite us.
I consider myself to have one of the greatest voices in the industry. I like pushing boundaries. My audience went, 'Wait, why is she singing jazz? What's going on?' And then they went, 'Oh, because she can. Because she loves it.' And jazz, a music invented by the African American community, is the greatest art form, I believe, to have ever come out of this country.

TODAY'S WORDS - STRENGTH OF PURPOSE

A sound head, an honest heart, and a humble spirit are the three best guides through time and to eternity. For success, attitude is equally as important as ability. The willow which bends to the tempest often escapes better than the oak which resists it. To be ambitious of true honor, of the true glory and perfection of our natures, is the very principle and incentive of virtue. The paths of virtue, though seldom those of worldly greatness, are always those of pleasantness and peace. Without courage there cannot be truth, and without truth there can be no other virtue. To the timid and hesitating, everything is impossible because it seems so. A rusty nail placed near a faithful compass, will sway it from the truth.
Unless a tree has borne blossoms in spring, you will vainly look for fruit on it in autumn. Many of our cares are but a morbid way of looking at our privileges. Discretion is the perfection of reason, and a guide to us in all the duties of life. One crowded hour of glorious life, crowded to the full with glorious action, and filled with noble risks, is worth an age without a name. It is wonderful what strength of purpose and boldness and energy of will are roused by the assurance that we are doing our duty. Look back, and smile on perils past. Sleep in peace, and wake in joy.

Live your life with arms wide open. Today is where your book begins. The pen is in your hands, the rest is still unwritten. Staring at the blank page before you, write your own songs. It helps you to mean what you're singing, which will then make it mean something to listeners.

SMALL STRAWS IN A SOFT WIND by Marsha Burns

March 30, 2025: It is a foolish errand to be angry with God. Anger against the Lord is like rolling in the mud and then being angry about getting dirty. All we have to do is take responsibility for our own mess, and line up with the Word of God. Ephesians 4:26 Be angry, and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your wrath.

TODAYS WORDS - TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

I find inspiration in everything. It has cost me a great deal to become myself. I don't want to be another person. Hope is for people who wait. And I don't want to wait no more. I'm not scared anymore. I'm not scared of myself. Of my things. Of my fear. I'm not scared about saying what I think. I feel what I sing, and I sing what I feel. Really, that's all I can do. I think that at one moment you're apt for one thing, and at the next moment you're apt for something else.
I sing against emotional dictatorships, and against the imposition of one person over another, in the name of love. I have a very big conflict with the individualization of love. I feel like it's egotistical to just love one person when you can love so many of them. I feel so much love that I declare myself a lover of all. Sure, I know that I cannot speak in proper English. I know that I can't sing in proper English. I don't care. They kicked me out of the church when I'm a little girl because they said I'm singing like a dog. They didn't want me to sing there anymore.
I am the consequence of a particular type of demographic movement, one that has always involved paying a high price. I was always the only black in the movie theater, the only black in class, the only black in the library, the only black in the discotheque. I always felt observed and judged. I live in a universe in which blame doesn't exist. I don't believe in being at fault; I believe in taking responsibility for your actions. If I do something wrong, I take responsibility for it.

TODAY'S WORDS - IT'S PHENOMENAL

You know you must be doing something right if old people like you. You can become famous, but you can't become unfamous. You can become infamous but not unfamous. The hardest thing to do is to be true to yourself, especially when everybody is watching. After a while, a joke, if you say it too much, just becomes contrived, or fake sounding. I just always loved stand-up. It's like magic. You say something, and a whole room full of people laughs together. Say something else, they laugh again. The fact that people come to see that and participate in that... I don't know, it's just like magic. Stand-up is the kind of gig that'll show you where you're at.
People don't know what it's like standing up there onstage, when you have a wall of people smiling at you. When I'm on stage, I get really happy there. Maybe that's the only time in my adult life I feel like myself. I care about the work I do. But I'm not going to say that money's not an issue. The worst thing to call somebody is crazy. It's dismissive. If I can make a teacher's salary doing comedy, I think that's better than being a teacher. Every black American is bilingual. All of them. We speak street vernacular, and we speak 'job interview.'
There's a lot of people who don't want anything from me but to laugh and have a good time. You see them at the show, and they like - they dress up to come see your show and stuff. And they pack these auditoriums and it's a lot of fun, man. It's like, this is how I started, and it's still fun for me. I want to tell my jokes. I want to have time with my children. I want to entertain people. And at one point, I'll walk away from show business. But I don't want to walk away empty-handed. Because I was surrounded by so much negativity at some point that it took me going back and doing stand-up to realize, you know, people really like me. The world can't tell you who you are. You've just got to figure out who you are and be there, for better or worse. I love being famous - it's phenomenal.

IT'S TIME FOR
JUST JOKING MONDAYS

Yes, we have, your honor!

After a two-week criminal trial in a very high-profile bank robbery case, the jury finally ends its fourteen hours of deliberations and enters the courtroom to deliver its verdict to the judge. The judge turns to the jury foreman and asks, “Has the jury reached a verdict in this case?” “Yes, we have, your honor,” the foreman responds.
“Would you please pass it to me,” the judge declares, and motions for the bailiff to retrieve the verdict slip from the foreman and deliver it to him. After the judge reads the verdict himself, he delivers the verdict slip back to his bailiff to be returned to the foreman and instructs the foreman, “Please read your verdict to the court.”
“We find the defendant not guilty of all four counts of bank robbery,” states the foreman. The family and friends of the defendant jump for joy at the sound of the “not guilty” verdict and hug each other as they shout expressions of gratitude. The defendant’s attorney turns to his client and asks, “So, what do you think about that?”
The defendant looks around the courtroom slowly with a bewildered look on his face and then turns to his defense attorney and says, “I’m real confused here. Does this mean that I have to give all the money back?”

SMALL STRAWS IN A SOFT WIND by Marsha Burns

April 1, 2025: Reach for Me, says the Lord, especially when you feel discombobulated. Quiet your soul so that you can evaluate what it is that is keeping you from inner peace. You may not be able to do anything to allay your discontent outwardly, but you have all power and authority over your thoughts and emotions. Find that place of stillness in yourself. Psalm 46:10 Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!

    T H O U G H T   F O R   C O N S I D E R A T I O N
TODAY'S WORDS - PLACE OF STILLNESS

The surest way to make ourselves crazy is to get involved in other people's business, and the quickest way to become sane and happy is to tend to our own affairs. Furthermore, worrying about people and problems doesn't help. It doesn't solve problems, it doesn't help other people, and it doesn't help us. It is wasted energy. Our best problem-solving resource is peace. Solutions arise easily and naturally out of a peaceful state. Life is always moving, changing, shifting into its next shape. The movement is natural. It is how we evolve. Let the shifts happen. Take responsibility for yourself each step of the way. Trust the new shape and form of your world. It's so easy to look around and notice what's wrong. It takes practice to see what's right. Letting go of our ideas about how life should go is a choice that sets life's magic free. Acceptance is the magic that makes change possible. It is not forever; it is for the present moment.
Let go of your expectations. The universe will do what it will. Sometimes your dreams will come true. Sometimes they won't. Sometimes when you let go of a broken dream, another one gently takes its place. Be aware of what is, not what you would like to be, taking place. We don't just get our choice; we get the consequence that choice creates. Do we really have the right to take care of ourselves? Do we really have the right to set boundaries? Do we really have the right to be direct and say what we need to say? You bet we do. Accept yourself. Love yourself just as you are. Your finest work, your best moments, your joy, peace, and healing come when you love yourself. You give a great gift to the world when you do that. You give others permission to do the same: to love themselves. Revel in self-love. Roll in it. Bask in it, as you would the sunshine. I pray for faith that my future will be good if I live today well, and in peace. I will remember that staying in the present is the best thing I can do for my future. I will focus on what’s happening now instead of what’s going to happen tomorrow.
Embrace and love all of yourself - past, present, and future. Forgive yourself quickly and as often as necessary. Encourage yourself. Tell yourself good things about yourself. Remember to be kind. Remember to be loving. Remember to feel all your feelings and to take care of yourself. But most of all, remember to be happy. Let your mind and soul be at ease. Don't grasp and grab for the magic and miracles. When you reside in that place of stillness, the joy, miracles, and magic you're seeking will find you. Prayer changes things. Prayer changes us. Prayer changes life. Sometimes an event has been manifested that needs to be stopped, midair. Don't pray just when you're in trouble. Pray every day. Surround yourself with prayer. You never know when you might need an extra miracle.
Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. It turns problems into gifts, failures into successes, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. It can turn an existence into a real life, and disconnected situations into important and beneficial lessons. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. Gratitude makes things right. Be patient. Relax and trust. Let go. Then, let go some more.

TODAY'S WORDS - SENSE OF BALANCE

I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions. You can learn great things from your mistakes when you aren’t busy denying them. The reality is that everybody makes mistakes. The issue isn't whether you will make them, it's what you will do about them. It's whether you will choose the path of humility and courage or the path of ego and pride. Where you are headed is more important than how fast you are going. Rather than always focusing on what's urgent, learn to focus on what is really important. Your most important work is always ahead of you, never behind you.
Prepare your mind and heart before you prepare your speech. What we say may be less important than how we say it. We are free to choose our actions, . . . but we are not free to choose the consequences of these actions. Free your heart from hatred - forgive. Free your mind from worries - most never happen. Live simply and appreciate what you have. Give more. Expect less. Be a light, not a judge, be a model not a critic. Little by little, your circle of influence will explode, and you will avoid the emotional metastasizing cancers of complaining, criticizing, competing, comparing and cynicism, all which reflect victimization, all of which are the opposite of being proactive. Be a part of the solution, not the problem.
Seek to understand before you seek to be understood. Quality relationships are built on principles, especially the principle of trust. Wisdom is your perspective on life, your sense of balance, your understanding of how the various parts and principles apply and relate to each other. Trust is the glue of life. It's the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It's the foundational principle that holds all relationships. Trust is a function of two things: character and competence. Character includes your integrity, your motive and your intent with people. Competence includes your capabilities, your skills, and your track record. Both are vital. To touch the soul of another human being is to walk on holy ground. We can never really change someone; people must change themselves.

WEDNESDAY WELLNESS
    Why Are Pill Bottles Orange?
By Emily Surpless
Published on Mar. 06, 2025
https://www.thehealthy.com/

Whether you take medication for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, or another need, the pharmacy often tucks an orange pill bottle inside that paper bag. In fact, if you regularly take prescriptions, you could probably open your medicine cabinet right now to a row of nearly identical containers—making it tough to find the right one on your first glance. So, why are pill bottles orange? Why don’t we use different colors? It turns out that the orange hue doesn’t just harken back to the days when apothecaries offered amber vials for the public. It provides major protection for medication, something some other colors just don’t. To put it simply, orange pill bottles protect medication from light.

The importance of using orange pill bottles...

Many of us have experienced the discomfort of a sunburn. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays are a form of radiation, and not an insignificant one—the Mayo Clinic reminds us that under some circumstances, an individual could get a harmful sunburn in less than 15 minutes. Just as our skin is composed of cells and molecules, so is a drug with its very specific chemical composition. “Light-induced chemical changes” can occur, explains Britannica, and the molecules can be altered, impacting and degrading the effectiveness of a medication. The translucent orange bottle, however, blocks the sun’s harmful UV rays, keeping the prescription’s quality intact.

Why translucent orange?

Orange pill bottles can minimize the amount of light that can reach the prescription and prevent potential chemical changes that could occur as the result of the sun’s UV rays. However, orange pill bottles aren’t the only ones capable of blocking the sun’s rays. Opaque white pill bottles also protect medication, blocking out UV light—making it a better choice for photo-sensitive drugs.
Unlike opaque white bottles though, translucent orange bottles allow you to easily see its contents without having to open it. Its why amber glasses are sometimes used for sporting activities: Vision experts point out that this color can “heighten contrast” so you can identify which pills are inside to help ensure you’re taking the correct one at the correct time.

Other reasons we use orange pill bottles...

Experts say there are two other major benefits to using orange bottles. First, using orange makes pill bottles easy to spot. No matter how crowded your medicine cabinet is or how messy your purse is, that bright pop of orange is likely to stand out. Orange bottles are also synonymous with pharmaceuticals. Anytime you see an orange pill bottle, you know that there’s a prescribed drug in there. This makes it easy to distinguish prescriptions from over-the-counter medication and other small bottles you may have in your home (though it’s important to follow the indicated dosage and other instructions on the bottle, no matter what you’re taking).
Some pet families have found the orange may help distinguish a veterinary prescription, which at times are filled in green bottles. No matter what color your pills come in or what kind you take, this is a good reminder to keep your stash out of the sun and in a cooler area of your home. Understanding a little science this way can help ensure your meds do the job to help you feel your best.

This is for information purposes only and should not be considered as a substitute for medical expertise. These are opinions from an external panel of individual doctors. Please seek professional help regarding any health conditions or concerns.

Many of you are familiar with Dr. Mable Springfield Scott, a 1969 graduate of BTW. She coined the phrase "Faith Over Fear", as the title of her "PhD Doctoral Dissertation". Dr. Scott used that same thought, to write her first book describing how the personal beliefs of Bishop Charles Harrison Mason, preserved him through crisis, hardships, persecutions and pain. His legacy illustrated the true strength of God's ability to use ordinary people to perform the extraordinary.
Dr. Scott later wrote her second book entitled "38126 KING's KIDS" ... Nobody Said We Were Poor! Within the book, she describes how the strong village mentality within the 38126-zip code brought together a valuable, collective spirit. It further describes how the 38126 community manifested an inner self-worth to win, to succeed, to achieve as King's Kids and to get rid of the negative images, descriptions, and illustrations that painted defeat. How taking on the characteristics of the Memphis 38126 community and looking within herself helped her to regain love, hope and faith!
Your Reunion Committee is asking you to use your "Faith Over Fear", by joining us to celebrate our 55th Class Reunion. Admittedly, living in the 38126 Zip Code gave each of us a valuable, collective spirit. Characteristics which helped manifest our inner self-worth to win and initiative to succeed. The locations for our reunion, were selected utilizing our "Faith Over Fear". For the present moment, the only real safe place in Memphis is six feet underground in one of numerous cemeteries. Security will be provided during each occasion and according to 2 Timothy 1:7, God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
We're attempting to use these accolades to make this a memorable event for all. Hopefully, you've received and read the email from our Co-Chairman Tommie McKinnie by now. It truly incorporates the significance of the 38126 logic for inspiration, highlighted by Dr. Mable Scott. "Nobody Said We Were Poor" and 55 years later, that statement remains a fact. Join us in the spirit of power and love, with a sound mind. Let us not allow the modern-day political concepts of present-day economic crises, hardships, persecutions and pain prevent us from having a glorious time together. Join us by sending your financial assessment promptly. Help us to regain the love for one another, the hope and the faith as ordinary people, attempting to perform the extraordinary. We appreciate your consideration and would be much obliged by your meaningful response to our request.

TODAY'S WORDS - BE PATIENT

Character may be manifested in the great moments, but it is made in the small ones. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers. Pray for powers equal to your tasks. Life is too short to nurse one's misery. The true way to be humble is not to stoop until you are smaller than yourself, but to stand at your real height against some higher nature that will show you what the real smallness of your greatness is. Hurry across the lowlands so that you may spend more time on the mountain tops. No one ever fell under the burden of the day; it is only when the burden of tomorrow is added that the load becomes unbearable. Forgive, forget. Bear with the faults of others as you would have them bear with yours.
The best advisers, helpers and friends always are not those who tell us how to act in special cases, but who give us, out of themselves, the ardent spirit and desire to act right, and leave us then, even through many blunders, to find out what our own form of right action is. The place where two friends first met is sacred to them all through their friendship, all the more sacred as their friendship deepens and grows old. No man or woman of the humblest sort can really be strong, gentle and good, without the world being better for it, without somebody being helped and comforted by the very existence of that goodness. To say, 'well done' to any bit of good work is to take hold of the powers which have made the effort and strengthen them beyond our knowledge.
As you emphasize your life, you must localize and define it... you cannot do everything. Let us beware of losing our enthusiasms. Let us ever glory in something and strive to retain our admiration for all that would ennoble, and our interest in all that would enrich and beautify our life. It is while you are patiently toiling at the little tasks of life that the meaning and shape of the great whole of life dawn on you. Be patient and understanding. Life is too short to be vengeful or malicious. Only the soul that with an overwhelming impulse and a perfect trust gives itself up forever to the life of other men, finds the delight and peace which such complete self-surrender has to give. It is while you are patiently toiling at the little tasks of life that the meaning and shape of the great whole of life dawn on you.

TODAY'S WORDS - COURAGE AND HOPE

Many think that assigning blame settles matters. Living alone makes it harder to find someone to blame. We make some changes. But mostly changes make us. Mistakes are the only universal form of originality. Small faults and virtues are for daily life. The big ones are for emergencies. The power of the past does not depend on our knowledge of it. We are prepared for insults, but compliments leave us baffled. Forgiveness is like faith. You have to keep reviving it. Regretting the past does not prevent me from repeating it. Between repetition and forgetting, it is a marvel that a new thought ever struggles into existence.
In love, we worry more about the meaning of silences than the meaning of words. You are as happy as you think you are, but not necessarily as miserable as you imagine. The meaning of today will not be clear until tomorrow. Inconsistency has been overpraised by people who do not expect to suffer from it. Moderation in all things is best, but it's pretty hard to get excited about it. Birth dates and bathroom scales tell more truth than I want to know. Pessimists fear becoming the dupes of Hope. Optimists enjoy Hope's company and consider being duped no great matter. Listen to what people say about themselves; they will tell you everything you need to know. Never invite to dinner: those who won't decide until the last minute; those who come more than half an hour late; those who want to bring along two or three friends; drunks; monologists; those who stay until three o'clock in the morning; those who think that conversation means having an argument; those who take a high moral tone; those who are stupid, ugly, or dull. Enforcement of these rules will enable one to eat alone every night in comfort.
After I have said what is required by my vanity and my morality, I may find a moment for Truth. Lack of reciprocity ruins friendships but makes love affairs exciting for a time.  There is a line between a definite maybe and an indefinite yes. Awakening in the morning returns us to life, and to awareness of death. Life just keeps unfolding, ignoring our praise or blame. People who behave at forty as they did at twenty must sometimes wonder why their charm is not working. Existence is not a mystery unless you think it has a meaning. The older we become, the more certain our future. Every day begins with an act of courage and hope: getting out of bed. Three meals plus bedtime make four sure blessings a day.

BIRTH ANNIVERSARY GREETINGS
TO
 PATRICIA WHITE
WATSON

It is not too late. You are not too old. You are right on time-And you are better than you know.  ...you're on this earth with a divine purpose: to rise to the level of your highest creative possibility, expressing all that you are intellectually, emotionally, psychologically, and physically in order to make the universe a more beautiful place.
Happiness is the choice I make today. It does not rest on my circumstances, but on my frame of mind...In cultivating the habits of happiness, I attract the people and situations that match its frequency. I smile more often, give praise more often, give thanks more often, and am glad more often. For such is my choice today.

WELCOME TO
SMOOTH
 CONTEMPORARY JAZZ

Music is emotional, and you may catch a musician in a very unemotional mood or you may not be in the same frame of mind as the musician. So a critic will often say a musician is slipping. I'm not playing for other musicians. We're trying to reach the guy who works all day and wants to spend a buck at night. We'll keep him happy. I am famous because I am an African American jazz artist. I'm an interpreter of stories. When I perform it's like sitting down at my piano and telling fairy stories.
