Gentlemen, here's a PSA for your PSA and Ladies, for your husband or significant other......

3 Signs of Prostate Cancer You Should Never Ignore by Elizabeth Millard

Prostate cancer signs can help you catch the disease early, when it's still curable. Know the symptoms of prostate cancer so you can know. Prostate cancer is the third most common form of cancer in the U.S., with more than 160,000 men diagnosed with it each year, according to the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER). The good news is, as far as cancers go, it’s pretty curable: More than 98 percent of men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer survive for five years or more. But the percentage drops when we’re talking about advanced cases: Once the cancer has spread to distant organs, the five-year survival rate is just 30 percent, SEER data shows.

That’s why screening can be beneficial. While the recommendations for PSA screening is still controversial, a study just published in September seems to support the test for older guys. In fact, the average guy should consider PSA screenings for prostate cancer beginning at age 56 and continuing to 69-and earlier if you are African American or have a family history of prostate cancer, Men’s Health urology advisor Larry Lipshultz, M.D., recommends. Prostate cancer is notoriously symptom-free in its early stages, which is one benefits of the screening test, says James Wysock, M.D., urologic oncologist and assistant professor of urology at NYU Langone Health. “Often, by the time you have symptoms, it may be because it’s advanced quite a bit,” he says. But here are the prostate cancer symptoms that could be telling.

Urinary changes

The prostate gland is located underneath your bladder and urethra. When you urinate, the bladder pushes its contents into the prostate-which has a tubular opening to let the urine pass through-and then into the urethra. As you age, your prostate grows-which can be known as benign prostate hyperplasia, or an enlarged prostate-and that tends to cause urination changes. But a tumor growing in your prostate can cause similar problems peeing, too. These urinary problems include a slow urinary stream, increased frequency, more urgency, and a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying, says Dr. Wysock. That may mean you’ll feel the urge to pee right after you just went.

Blood in your semen or urine

Seeing blood when you pee or blood when you ejaculate is not normal, and should get checked out whenever it happens, according to Dr. Wysock. It may be a symptom of prostate cancer, or come from another cause like infection or inflammation. Either way, schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor. Keep in mind that having zero ejaculation, though, is rarely a sign of prostate cancer, he adds. That’s more likely to be a problem with blocked ejaculation ducts, he says, or it may be a side effect of taking medication for benign prostastic hyperplasia, a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland.

Lower back pain and stiffness

If prostate cancer has spread outside of the gland, it tends to affect nearby tissues and bones, including the lower back and spine. It can press on the spinal nerves, causing pain or numbness, and cause tightness in the muscles, depending on where the cancer cells are located. Dr. Wysock emphasizes that diagnosing prostate cancer as a result of low back pain is very rare, although it is possible.

When to see a doctor

Keep in mind that these three potential prostate cancer signs can be caused by a myriad of much more minor issues, according to Dr. Wysock. “Think of them as triggers for evaluation,” he says. “But even with these, your first thought shouldn’t automatically be that you have prostate cancer.” So yes, if they pop up, see your doctor-but don’t freak out about prostate cancer right away. And talk to your doctor about PSA screening, especially if you’re in your 50s or are at higher risk of prostate cancer.

Go get your PSA screen !

So THAT’S The Difference Between Alzheimer’s And Dementia

Breaking down what you need to know about the brain conditions.

Colleen Travers On Assignment For HuffPost

Dementia can sum up many different brain-related conditions and should be thought of more as a syndrome rather than a disease. Seeing someone you love like a parent or grandparent experience memory loss can be crushing. However, just because someone starts having slip-ups doesn’t automatically mean they’re showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease.  It could, of course, be nothing. Or cognitive confusion or decline could be more of a sign of dementia ― which isn’t the same thing as Alzheimer’s, despite what many people might think. Although there’s an overlap between the two, there are some important differences to note. Below is information on how dementia and Alzheimer’s vary, so you can help your loved ones ― or yourself ― get the right kind of treatment.

Dementia is an umbrella term for many different conditions ― including Alzheimer’s

Dementia can sum up many different brain-related conditions and should be thought of more as a syndrome rather than a disease. “Dementia is a cognitive loss at any time of life and encompasses many diseases,” said George Perry, chief scientist of the Brain Health Consortium at the University of Texas at San Antonio and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. “It can happen at any stage of life … or because of an accident resulting in brain damage or a stroke.” Within this group is Alzheimer’s disease, which accounts for more than 50 percent of dementia diagnoses, according to Elise Caccappolo, associate professor of neuropsychology and director of the Neuropsychology Service at Columbia University Medical Center. And while the causes of Alzheimer’s are a little tricky to pinpoint (more on that below), age can be a big factor. “Over 60 percent of age-related cognitive loss in the U.S. is due to Alzheimer’s,” Perry said.

Most people won’t know for sure if they have Alzheimer’s.

What makes Alzheimer’s a difficult disease to pinpoint is the fact that the condition is only confirmed through an autopsy. “We can diagnose it when someone is alive, but we are never completely certain until after they go to an autopsy, and we look for specific pathological changes in the brain that we can determine that they died from Alzheimer’s,” Caccappolo said. “Major medical centers are pretty good at diagnosing it, but in other parts of the country or [when seeing] a general neurologist, the term ‘Alzheimer’s’ can be thrown around very commonly, and if someone doesn’t have it, the medication isn’t going to help, and they could be missing out on other treatments,” she added. One of the biggest red flags that someone may have Alzheimer’s is the classic short-term memory loss. This is because Alzheimer’s manifests itself in the area of the brain responsible for learning new information and making new memories, Caccappolo said. This explains why someone with Alzheimer’s can likely remember what they ordered on their first date with their spouse 50 years ago, but has trouble remembering where they put their glasses (or that they even now need glasses).

Other types of dementia typically develop differently than Alzheimer’s

Next to Alzheimer’s, there are three types of dementia that Caccappolo and Perry say are the most common. These include vascular dementia, which is when someone experiences a stroke or diabetes that results in a lack of oxygen to the brain; frontotemporal dementia, a condition that typically affects people ages 60 and up, where a protein that’s similar to Alzheimer’s leads to nerve cell loss in the brain; and Lewy body dementia, where protein deposits develop in the areas of the brain responsible for motor skills and memories. All of these diseases have different symptoms, but overall there may be instances of severe mood swings, personality changes and a major decline in cognitive and motor skills. Anything from absorbing information to getting dressed in the morning takes longer and is more tedious to handle. Perry added that in severe cases, such as with Lewy body dementia, patients may even experience hallucinations.

Risk Factors For Dementia And Alzheimer’s

“Alzheimer’s prevalence doubles every five years after the age 60.” A bit of an unsettling aspect to dementia and Alzheimer’s both is that there’s no real cursor as to who is more susceptible than others to develop a dementia-related disease. “Most of these diseases are sporadic, they have no obvious genetic cause,” Perry said. Some people may have genetic inheritance ― and typically those cases are the early onset version of the disease ― but just because someone in your family had Alzheimer’s doesn’t mean you’re going to have it too. “If your grandmother had it in her 40s then you might be more concerned and do genetic testing, but if she had it over the age of 65 you may have an increased risk, but it’s really small,” he said. Perry does stress that Alzheimer’s is more prevalent in women, most likely because women tend to live longer than men. “Alzheimer’s prevalence doubles every five years after the age 60,” he said.

It’s been debated if alcohol consumption can cause any form of dementia, including Alzheimer’s, but Caccappolo said there’s no reason to believe this is fully true. “We don’t diagnose dementia from alcohol frequently, and it’s not a known cause. It makes other things worse, but it’s rare people get dementia just from alcohol abuse,” she said.

However, lifestyle factors generally can play a pretty big role, Perry said. Healthy habits, including a good diet and proper exercise, are crucial to curbing your risk for and treating Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

Kenneth, thank you for this very timely information. I believe all of us mostl likely have been touched by one of these conditions either in our families or know someone who is currently struggling with alzheimers or dementia. As we mature, I also doubt that any one of us has not considered that we may have personally experienced an early symptom having forgotten where we placed an object or some important date. Thank you, my friend, for this vital information and all that you continue to do to keep us informed.

I think it's nice to age gracefully. OK, you lose the youth, a certain stamina and dewy glow, but what you gain on the inside as a human being is wonderful: the wisdom, the acceptance and the peace of mind. It's a fair exchange.  ~ Cherie Lunghi ~

Thank you Patricia and Larry for your reply. I only pray that everyone who read the post learned something about themselves or their family members. In the military, we sometimes called it "CRS". You can chose whatever you want the last letter to stand for, but the first two are 'Can't Remember Sh-------". After the post concerning the introduction to the 1969 Class of Warriors, I expected more replies to my request to stay tuned. I acknowledge that it was again a case of sensationalized journalism, if you want to label it as such.  All playfulness and any confusion aside, here's the real beginning of the introduction....Everyone, please enjoy! Don't be ashamed to post a reply, everyone of us has something to say...No one is exempt or above anyone else...we're paying for this priviledge to communicate on this website, and I for one haven't choosen to be the only one talking, but I will, until you've grown tired of me....! just say something...

STAY TUNED.....MORE TO COME...SERIOUSLY !

I agree that age brings about all kinds of changes and challenges...we learn to adjust and maintain just as we have done all throughout life.  I know that dementia and alheizmers starts to take our memory; however, communication is a way to help combat these ills.  Communication means that we are actively engaged in sharing memories and bridging those memories from the past to the present and even to the future!

To this end, I thoroughly enjoy reading the communication on the web-site!  The pictures always make me smile even as I struggle to determine who is in them!  Especially the class room pictures!  I am always amazed and appreciative of those of us who remember everything!  Please share your memories!  We are leaving a legacy!

Consider, our 50th reunion is coming up!  What about a senior year of activities...kind of like what we experienced during our senior year!  We need to start brainstorming ideas and, as such, no idea is wrong...let's just get a list of ideas going!

OK...I will start!

How about senior pictures...say 3-5 head shots with different outfits...we can make a date of it...whereever you are in the world...go take a few pictures...OR...have someone take about 3-5 pictures of you doing/wearing different things...we will compile and we will build an electronic yearbook!

That's my idea!

What is yours?

Mickey

Our parents deserve our honor and respect for giving us life itself. Beyond this they almost always made countless sacrifices as they cared for and nurtured us through our infancy and childhood, provided us with the necessities of life, and nursed us through physical illnesses and the emotional stresses of growing up.  ~ Ezra Taft Benson ~

Thank you Ladies for your statements. Surely others have something to bring to the website discussion. Communication for us these days is not commercial.....

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALICE HOLMAN NESBITT"

Love is the crowning grace of humanity, the holiest right of the soul, the golden link which binds us to duty and truth, the redeeming principle that chiefly reconciles the heart to life, and is prophetic of eternal good.  ~Petrarch ~

Hello Alice, and Happy Birthday to you. As an educator, your love of the craft, duty, truth and your "heart to life" teaching methods, reconciles our class to acknowledge the prophetic eternal good that you've extended to the least among us. May your day of celebration be complete with every golden rod that you've displayed in your own personal life. May your family and friends bring an everlasting tribute to your soul. Petrarch also stated " It is more honorable to be raised to a throne, than to be born to one. Fortune bestows the one, merit obtains the other." As you sit on your well deserved throne of merit today, enjoy this glimpse from the past....Love is the message.....
