Jerry and I were friends through high school, and at Grace Methodist Church. I lost track of him after graduation, at least until Facebook! I'm sad to learn of his passing. He was a great friend.

Jerry and I fished, hunted and explored together in McKellar Park.  Sometimes we would ride our bicycles down there too.  McKellar had a single dirt road and lots of wild areas.  We almost always had the place to ourselves.  He was a good friend and fearless adventurer.  We had many great times.

Jerry had a job at a Seven-Elevan and also had a morning paper route.  He was a hard worker.  We would sometimes get together after throwing papers and watch the kaleidoscope sunrises and the magnificant V's of geese slide through our quiet orange sky.  We drank hot coffee from his thermos and cherished our good luck.

Memphis had spectacular summer were mornings.  Daybreak was swathed in warm gentle breezes and breathtaking horizons.  We would pick up our bundled papers at around 3:30, fold em', rubberband em', stack em', and finally toss em' on porches. By the time we finished, the still-hidden sun had ignited the east.  Time for coffee, conversation, and stunning views.

Fishing and money were powerful pulls on Jerry, but they were surpassed by his love of Claudia Herrington.  I can't remember if he even racked up enough nerve to talk to her, but gosh, he did dreamily run-on about her beauty and charms!  I could only agree that she was very beautiful, and that yes, he had picked a fantastic girl to love from afar, and then I would try to console him in his forlorn, Claudia-less life.

I once suggested to him that the dazzling beauty, Claudia, was above both our marks, and that perhaps he should go after girls that didn't strike him mute when she was in the same room with him. He never heeded my sage advice. He was a gonner, totally twitterpated.

Unfortunately, since then, I have completely lost touch with The Jer.  I hope he whittled out a good life for himself.   I bet he did.  He was a very good guy. I'm lucky to have known him.
