I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Mike Smith.  Mike was such a great person, liked and respected by all who knew him.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Mike was a great person and the time we share in high school will always be remembered.  So many of our friends of old have passed away and yet their memories are still alive.

Mike rest in peace.

When I saw Mike for the first time I was stunned.  He reminded me of a Roman gladiator. He always had such a powerful physical presence.  It never left him.

But when I got to know him, my caution around him gradually melted away. He had this inborn humorous outlook that seemed part of his bones. He would rock his head back when he smiled his quick, quiet smile.  And he smiled a lot.  Mike was happy at Whitehaven.

Yet he was, to me, first and foremost our athlete. When he went to war for us on the gridiron, or the court, or the diamond . . . he was our Achilles.  He fought for us with might, and speed, and heart.  He was our standard bearer.  The best possible standard bearer.
