Julie Cogburn, 49, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, and teacher was born in Denver, CO on November 27, 1967 to Dennis and Marge Newell. Julie was married to her husband, David, of 26 years and had two children: Ryan and Ainsley. She was the older sister of Jim Newell. Julie attended the University of Tulsa where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Theater. She then moved to Norman, OK to marry David and be with him until he received his commission in the US Navy. On entering the Navy, Julie took her role as a Navy wife head on. Moving from Oklahoma to Florida, South Carolina, Rhode Island, and Georgia, Julie looked at each move as an adventure. She quickly made friends inside and outside of the Navy and settled into each new routine as if she had always been there. While living in Rhode Island, Julie received her Master of Arts in Education, Secondary English from Boston College, and when Julie and David moved to Georgia, Julie taught at Camden County High School while David finished his Naval service. After leaving the Navy, they moved to Chicago where Julie gave birth to both of her children and taught at Wheaton North High School. Five years later they moved to Houston, and Julie joined the faculty at Cy-Fair High School. Finally, in 2008 Julie was offered a position at Panther Creek High School in Cary, NC, and they moved one last time to be near Julie's family and plant roots for Ryan and Ainsley. Julie was a highly accomplished teacher, and she was loved and respected by students and colleagues alike. She was a National Board Certified Teacher, Advanced Placement Exam Grader for CollegeBoard, English Department Chair, and Beginning Teacher Coordinator and Mentor. Throughout her career Julie supported her schools and students both inside and outside the classroom. Her commitment to and love for kids and education led her to do everything from coaching cheer-leading to teaching neuroscience-based education techniques to other teachers. She led students to state championships in Speech, directed school plays, prepped kids for their National Merit exams, and tutored students in college essay writing. Julie was also very active in her church, Cornerstone Presbyterian. She served as an elder, was a youth leader at vacation bible school and a mission trip, and gave children's sermons. As in all other parts of her life, she brought her infectious smile, love and enthusiasm to the congregation. While Julie's life was cut far too short, the impact she had on her family, her community, and her students will last for generations. Her love, energy, and joy made us all want to be better versions of ourselves.
