An Open Letter to My Classmates

My heart has entered the time of tears.

Memories drip from my old cheekbones

into pools of reflection. My eyes swell from

looking backward.

Do you remember when we first met,

stumbling with uncertainty on the front

steps of tomorrow. Callow kids who

changed the world in a thousand days.

We pried Middlebury out of the past and

scraped the mold of quaint etiquette from

her columns. We fought on both sides of a

war of lies. We had sex. 

We were—we are!—the Class of ’69. 

And we are saying goodbye on Chapel steps

once again. I miss you, beloved friends. But I

will see you at a future reunion. Meet me in

the sky. I’ll have tears dripping from my old

cheekbones; I’ll be so happy to see you.
