Lana Largent (Lance)

Dr. Larry Largent  - Passed away July 3, 2006

Larry was always a success at whatever he did.  After graduating near the top of his class at Robert E. Lee High School, he attended Tulane University and graduated Cum Laude, with a B.S. in Biology.  He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Larry worked as a medical doctor for  the University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston for over 20 years.  Larry was the Houston District Medical Director for UTMB-Galveston.  In 2002, Larry received the Jason Calhoun Award of Excellence for his medical services.  After his passing, the name of this award was changed to the Larry Largent Award of Excellence and is awarded each year to an outstanding medical professional.

Larry was in charge of  hiring doctors for many Texas prison units.  He led the effort and was successful in  improving prisoner health care in the Texas prison system.  He implemented a tele medicine program to see patients in rural prison units that did not have a full time staff doctor.  He worked directly with prisoners.   He woke up early each morning to make his drive to the prison usually beginning his workday by 6:30.  After his passing, we recieved letters and cards from many of the prisoners expressing a personal loss.

Larry was diagnosed with lymphoma is 2001.  During his chemotherapy, he never missed a day of work.

Larry was active in his church and caring for others.  He had many friends, was a great cook and enjoyed hosting dinner parties.   He was unselfish and his life exemplified his Christian faith.  He helped many people through the years and he was an amazing uncle to my two children as well as his other niece and nephew.   Larry was so smart and kind and had a positive outlook on life despite his illness.   He had a twinkle in his eye and a smile that just made you feel good.

His lymphoma returned and he passed away a month after he quit work.  Goodbyes are painful and cause an emptiness.  Jesus promises life after death and there will be a day when we can say hello to him once again.
