In Memory

Grant Henry Moskowitz

Grant Henry Moskowitz

November 20, 1948 - March 4, 2010

Grant died on March 4, 2010.  Charlie Bernheim was very shaken by Grant’s death and sent this touching remembrance:   “We were very close growing up.  He was the first friend that I had in Millburn Junior High.  I remember the start of that friendship as if it was yesterday even though it was 57 years ago.  My first day at MJHS after spending time getting registered for class, Vice Principal Rooney took me around to Mr. Ted Bear's math class and plopped me down right next to who would soon become my partner in crime, Grant Moskowitz.  Through Grant, I instantly became acquainted with a whole network of his friends.  Through all the years that we knew each other, most of my friends got to know him, and I got to know most, if not all, of his.  He was from the South Mountain area, which was a neighborhood of many families where everyone knew each other.  A lot of activity was centered on the local synagogue where he sang in the choir.

One of my fondest memories was when, being inspired by the Beach Boys, we purchased a surf board and then transported it by bus from Newark, much to the chagrin of the driver, and somehow were able to move it to Belmar to my aunt’s house.  Through high school we surfed the Jersey Shore during the summers, took numerous ski trips with our families, and both got to know each other's extended families well.

Grant went to Northeastern University in Boston, and I was at Long Island University. We always kept in touch and would visit each other when we had time--it was the sixties, a wild time.  I was at Grant’s wedding and presented a toast.

After graduation, I traveled in Europe and Israel for a year and returned to Long Island. I was in bad straights.  Grant helped me get back on my feet.  There were periods when we lost touch with one another but sooner or later we would make contact.  We were at each other's sons’ Bar Mitzvahs; he traveled to Richmond, VA, and I went to San Diego, CA.

A few years later he contacted me just after his son’s passing; he was, of course, very distraught.  Then it seemed that all was well.  He was in Mexico as part of a group that was refurbishing a sailboat.  Later he flew to New Jersey to pick up some Navigation Electronics.  We spent some time on my boat, giving each other sailing advice.  He was in fine health and good spirits.

I was visiting in Jersey City when his sister called with the news of his death.  I have always been around death, and it doesn't usually affect me.  I still remember the cold numb feeling when she told me.  It was a combination of surprise and shock.  He was closer to me than my brother, and we were always there for each other.

The memory of Grant’s infectious laugh, good spirits, and positive attitude will remain with me always.”

Well said Charlie.  I reconnected with Grant just a few months before his death and miss him very much.  I met Grant in Hebrew School and I believe he was my first boy friend when we were in 6th grade.  RIP Grant.
