Dr James George Young - Class Of 1944

Young, Dr. James G. "Jim" Age 85, went to be with the Lord surrounded by loving family on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at his home in Lindenhurst, IL, after a short battle with Prostate Cancer. Jim was born July 18, 1926 in Milwaukee, WI to Howard and Gretchen Young, also from Milwaukee. After graduating from high school in Milwaukee Jim attended the University of Wisconsin earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. Not content with that, Jim continued his education at the University of North Carolina completing a Masters Degree in Chemistry and PhD from the School of Pharmacy. Upon graduation, Jim joined the U.S. Army where he served with distinction as a 1st Lt. at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C. until honorably discharged from service on January 31, 1956. A brief stint in the academic world as an Associate Professor in Chemistry at The Virginia School of Medicine and Professor of Chemistry at the University of Tennessee was followed by over 30 years as a Research Pharmacologist with Searle Pharmaceutical Company, Riker Laboratories and Pharmaquest, Inc. Jim loved the Lord, guitar music, writing poetry and birding. Jim was predeceased by his devoted wife of 45 years Jane Porter Young who went to be with the Lord on March 3, 1999. Survivors include his loving wife of 11 years Carleen; Son, Jack (Kathy) Elliott; Daughters, Nancy (Joseph) Gattone of Libertyville, Leesa (Ken) Taylor of Rohnert Park, CA, and Paula (James) David of St. Louis; Step-children, Sharon (Marcus) Hester, Valerie Wheat, Jeffery (Tabatha) Wheat, and Debbie (John) McCormick; Grandchildren include, Joseph (Amy) Gattone, James Gattone, Aleah Gattone, Andrea Gattone, Patrick Miller, Brian Miller, Kristin (Rory) Schneider, Michael David, Jason Wheat, Colleen Hanson, Kristina (Edward) Schafer, Cassandra Key, Stephanie Key, Sarah Sanders; and Great-Grandchildren, Sierra Mullis, Rachael Dennison, Jacob Hansen and Erin Dennis. A memorial service will be held Friday, April 20, 2012, 2:00 P.M. at Marsh Funeral Home, 305 N. Cemetery Road, Gurnee, IL 60031.
