Poppi’s Obituary

 

James J Maurer passed from our earth on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 after a long and richly filled life. He left peacefully, surrounded by family. He was 81.

 

Jim was born in 1937 in West Allis, Wisconsin. His parents were Harold and Margaret Maurer, both deceased, and is survived by his sister Carol. He graduated from Northwestern University, where he played football as a Wild Cat.  Jim was also a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He met his first wife, Sue Whatmore Maurer, and they married in North Salem, NY, in 1959. He was very proud to have served in the United States Marine Corp and retired as a Captain when he joined the Dow Chemical Company

He was with Dow Chemical his entire career which took us around the country. Jim lived in Wisconsin, Hawaii, California, Michigan, New Jersey, Switzerland, Vail, and Atlanta, GA. He was an avid golfer, tennis player, a beautiful skier, cyclist and runner. He climbed several notable Alps as well; the Monch, the Eiger, and Mt. Blanc, twice!

Jim is survived by four children; James J Maurer II, Kendall Maurer Knoll, Tracy Maurer Gardner, and Stephen Maurer.  Jim, also known as Poppi, has grandchildren; Hannah Maurer, Kyle Maurer, Sarah Maurer, Charlotte Gardner, Ellis Knoll, Emerson Knoll, Jonner Maurer, Greta Maurer, Ethan Knoll, and Lauren Maurer.

In 1995, Poppi lost his first wife. Then, in 2002, he married Julie Rench Layne Maurer in Topsfield, MA. Julie brought with her, two children; Holly Layne Johnson and David Layne II. They gave Poppi and Julie three more grandchildren; Katie Johnson, Nicholas Johnson, and Lukas Layne.

There will be a memorial reception in the future; time and place to be announced.
