James D. Martell Notice

Martell, James D. Age 70, Left for his final road trip July 2nd, 2017 destination unknown. Jim was the first of four children born to Bette and the late Harland Martell. Loving and devoted husband to Marilyn Meyerhofer-Martell for 36 years. Proud father of Gabriella (Dan) Broady, Alexandra (Chris) Henrichs and Justin (Faith) Martell. Loving grandpa of Brendan, Sam, Logan, Christy, Sullivan and Lillian. Brother of the late Karen, Sandy and Sue (Tom) Weiland. Further survived by special friends Ron Lintvedt, Sue Huebner and beloved kitty Pula. Jim was a social studies teacher in MPS for more than 30 years, 20 of them as a Purgolder at Washington High School. Passions included reading (especially history), travel and camping. He loved growing flowers in summer, hosting July 3rd fireworks and Halloween outings, putting up lights in winter, standing for peace year round and supporting many progressive causes. Relatives and friends will gather for a celebration of Jim and his life in the Garden Room at Wehr Nature Center 9701 W. College Ave. Saturday July 22nd from 6PM followed by a Time of Reflection at 6:30PM. Wear your best camping clothes. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the National Park Foundation, Peace Action, WI or for family wishes. Jim's family thanks the many medical professionals who cared for Jim in these past 5+ years, especially Dr. A. Shah, Jay, Jim's home care nurse. Toni Ruel (Ruel) (1982)

Mr. Martell was my Junior year US History teacher.  He was a very animated and passionate instructor.  He ensured we had an opportunity to learn more than what was in the history book.  As this was a Presidential election year, he encouraged us to learn how the electoral process in the US worked.  I hope he knew the influence he had on all his students.
