Wayne B. Hilbig (1962)

I was with Rush when he died in Nassau, Bahamas in a horrendous accident on August 23, 1961. Six of us were riding motor scooters around the island when he collided head on with a pick up truck killing him and the girl riding with him. He was a wonderful person and dear friend. I think of him often....especially on August 23rd each year.   Wayne Hilbig Class of 1962

Bob was a good friend and a super guy. A guy with unlimited potential with a great future ahead of him. I remember so often we went to the Pig and Whistle on Capial Drive. I have thought about Bob many times through the years. A great loss to me and to his many other friends.

Bob and I were in Mr. Perchonek's Speech Class and our assignment was to do a demonstration speech.  When Bob demonstrated, HOW TO MAKE A HOT FUDGE SUNDAE, I discovered that The Pig and Whistle, one of my favorite hangouts, was owned by his Family.  They had the best custard.  As I'm writing this, I'm picturing the summer nights, the walk-up window in the parking lot hearing the mosquitos getting zapped in the fluorescent lights.

Bob was the first person I knew who lost his life.  You don't ever forget something as powerful as that.  Years later, I met and became friendly with his delightful older and younger sisters, Susie McCollough and Katie Normoyle.  I loved telling them my memory of that class with Bob.  Sadly Susie, an accomplished interior designer, and a lovely person passed away early this year.

You are right, you never forget the first person your age who died.  Bob was such a charming guy,  who

had a golden glow about him, shared by his lovely sister Katie.  It was the first realization of the

random nature of tragedy and I think of him always, when more friends died too young.
