Dick Martin

Martin, Dick husband, father and grandfather, lost his 18-month struggle with esophageal cancer at home with his family on September 3, 2021 at the age of 79. He is survived by his wife of 57 years - Kathie, children - Ted (Kathy), John (Addie) and Molly (Aaron), 3 grandchildren - Charlie, Sophie, and Jack Richard, 3 brothers, 3 sisters and many valued friends, colleagues, and students.

After attending St. John's University, he went on to earn his PhD in developmental psychology at the Institute of Child Development, U of MN. He loved a lively discussion, but most often listened. When he chose to comment, everyone listened. Dick spent his career as a teacher/researcher at Gustavus Adolphus College. He was well respected by his colleagues and held positions as Department Head and Chairman of the Faculty Senate. As a teacher and student advisor he worked to ensure his students were successful both in school and in life.

Dick was a true renaissance man. In addition to his career as professor, he was a skilled mechanic, carpenter, electrician, plumber, landscaper and gardener. While working outdoors, he was often accompanied by his favorite dog breed, the German Shepherd. Dick also loved computers, learned to code and enjoyed online gaming until the very end. There were few projects too big for Dick. He built the family cabin at Lake Minnie Belle, where he hosted the 4th of July celebration for more than 40 years. This annual event grew to include 3 generations of friends and family.

The Martin family has planned two gatherings in memory of Dick. On October 3, 2-5 pm colleagues and friends are invited to the Gustavus Adolphus Interpretive Center with a short program at 3:30 pm. On October 9, 1-4 pm, family and friends are invited to the Martin home. There will be an opportunity at 2:30 pm for those who may wish to share a personal memory. They ask that all attendees be vaccinated. In lieu of flowers, Dick expressed his wish that everyone get vaccinated and be safe.
