Alan R. Nelson,  of Palm Desert, CA and Winona, MN died 4/30/2018 at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, Iowa following a lengthy illness.  He was born in Minneapolis on 2/17/1942 to Evelyn (Gaustad) and Raymond Nelson.  After graduating from De La Salle High School, he joined the United States Marine Corps.  He attended the University of Minnesota.  He married Carole Hackl in 1963, and they moved to Winona in 1968.  He is survived by his wife, his children Christopher (Lynne) Eagan, MN; Carrie (Bob) Berg Mason City, IA; Camille (Jeremy) Kuck Papillion NE, and 11 grand-children:  Kiersten, Gwendolyn, Karin, Kylie, Forrest, Alaina, Mason, Sawyer, Joseph, Kendall and Nolan.  Siblings Mary (Jim) Johnson, James, Julie (Michael Jubert).  Pre-deceased by son Craig, his parents, and sister Anne.

Al enjoyed fast cars as “The Quartermaster” in high school, boating, snowmobiling, dirt-biking, motorcycle touring, sailing, and golf.  He was one heck of a card player and could tell stories like no one else.  He was a long-time employee and eventual President of Winona Agency in Winona, MN before retiring in 2000.  Chartered Property-Casualty Underwriter (CPCU).  Longstanding volunteer with the “Big I” Education Committee and testified before the state legislature. Volunteered with the Winona-Area Jaycees, YMCA, Kiwanis, Elks, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona Country Club and Ironwood Country Club.

Memorial Mass at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 360 Main Street, Winona, MN at 10:30am on Monday, May 7th.  Visitation one hour prior to the service.  Private interment.  In lieu of flowers, memorials to Winona Family YMCA building fund http://www.winonaymca.org/donate or 207 Winona Street, Winona MN  55987.  Fawcett Junker Funeral Home and Crematory, Winona, MN and Fountain City, WI.
