Richard Dean Schultz died at Cottagewood Memory Care in Buffalo, Minnesota on May 25, 2015.  He was beloved by his family, friends, parish, and caregivers.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2015 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Annandale with Fr. George Kallumkalkudy as the Celebrant.  Burial will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights.  Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m. Friday at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Annandale and one hour prior to the service, Saturday, at the church.  A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.

Born January 12, 1942 to Raymond and Alice (Uptegrove) Schultz, Richard attended Visitation Grade School and graduated from De La Salle High School in Minneapolis. As a boy he was a proud altar server and Eagle Scout. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1965 with a B.S.B. in Accounting. In 1972, Richard purchased a small cabin on Lake Sylvia in Wright County.  He married his wife, Kathryn, in 1973 and meticulously built additions to their home to make room for the four children he and Kathryn raised.

Richard was a remarkably decent, steady, generous, forgiving and gentle man. He worked as the Chief Accountant and Risk Manager for Hennepin County; he commuted to Minneapolis for more than thirty years.  Prior to his service at Hennepin County, Richard worked for five years as an auditor for the firm of Peat Marwick Mitchell. He worked tirelessly on his home and property, spearheading a number of projects, including building sheds, plowing snow, splitting wood, and maintaining his family’s cars. Richard also lived a life in service to his community, including volunteering for his parish, the Boy Scout Troop 354, Kiwanis, Greater Lake Sylvia Association and Heart of the Lakes Triathlon. He imbued in his children the habits, value and significance of work. He was also an avid family historian and much of his research was later published by his brother, Jim, into three volumes totaling over 700 pages.

Richard suffered much in his journey with early-onset Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, which gradually deprived him of his ability to work and serve his family in the ways he always had. But he bore everything with patience and strength and was a tremendous witness to the potential for beauty and meaning in human suffering.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Kathryn Ann (Lorenz) Schultz of South Haven; brothers Jim (Jill) Schultz of Ramsey and Bob Schultz of Minneapolis; children David (Katie) Schultz of Seattle, Daniel (Mary) Schultz of South Haven, Karen Schultz of St. Louis Park, and James (Molly) Schultz of Minnetonka; and four grandchildren, Bethany, Paul, Catherine and one expected in August.
