Lucian Grathwol

Grathwol, Lucian Egan 60, died at home in St. Paul, MN, September 18, 2022. Born November 18, 1960, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Lucian spent his younger years as an Air Force child and thereby nomad, living in Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Taiwan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Colorado. The family eventually returned to Minneapolis, his father's home, and Lucian attended and graduated valedictorian of his class of 1980, at Southwest High School. He went west for college where he studied philosophy at Santa Clara University, drawn to the sun, surf, and laid-back lifestyle of northern California. Lucian's California dreams reached beyond the quotidian, he wanted to be an actor. Living up to his Vegas birthright, he gambled and lost on his dream of breaking into film or TV, but he returned to Minnesota and continued to tread the boards of the Twin Cities theater scene for many years. He performed multiple years in Shakespeare in the Park and collaborated with his brother Sean on producing and acting in a successful production of Sam Shepherd's Buried Child. Like many actors, he also worked in restaurants for years, but his true passion was the theater. Lucian was a magnificent man, a beautiful spirit -- whip-smart, fun-loving, generous, charming. Well-endowed with the Irish gift of gab, he could talk the last dollar out of your pocket but then he would turn right around and give you the shirt off his back. He loved his family fiercely, particularly his two children, Elijah and Ava. Lucian was preceded in death by his parents, John and Joey Grathwol, and two of his brothers, Michael and Sean. He is survived by his children and their mother, Mary Thury; by three siblings and their spouses Colleen Grathwol and husband, Scott Ferguson, Kathleen Grathwol, Tim Grathwol and wife, Beka Butter Grathwol. He was also proud uncle of six extraordinary nieces and nephews: Caitlin, Nick, McKeon, Dyllan, Bozena and Hazel. Lucian's funeral mass will be held at Annunciation Church of Minneapolis, on Saturday, October 22, at 11:00 am, followed by a lunch reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jungle Theater (jungletheater.org/…) in Lucian's name.
