March 20, 2011
Our life is March weather, savage and serene in one hour.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Mr. Emerson could have been writing about our West Texas weather.

As you know, and have experienced but maybe forgotten,
It's WINDY here in March!
One of Us has made good use of the West Texas Wind!

It's Jerry Freeze and his Texas Rockers and Windmills!
I visited with Jerry a few months ago at his Texas Rockers headquarters located on The Hill in Royalty....between Monahans and Grandfalls!  Besides making the West Texas Wind work for him, Jerry has also given new meaning to the popular phrase 'You Rock' with his Rocking Chairs and Swings.

Jerry travels around West Texas to a number of Craft Shows and Marketing Events with his Rockers, Windmills, Fence Post Welcome Signs, Tables and more.  So, if you are wanting to spend some time Rockin' on your Front Porch this Spring and Summer, stop by Jerry's Texas Rockers Headquarters in Royalty, Texas or catch him at Stanton's Old Sorehead Trade Days and get you a Rocker and a Windmill.  The next Old Sorehead Trade Days are April 9-10 and June 11-12.

Ever Hear a Windmill Moan?

 by Ray Cooper

Some say the Colt Peacemaker won the West,
Well, I’m not so sure it meets every test.
Others say the Winchester can lay that claim,
But then again a few questions remain.

When you look out across those sandy plains,
There ain’t much need to wait for a rain.
Oh a storm will come and the shutters will rattle,
But it may be too late for a herd of cattle.

There’s a sound that every cow knows,
And you can hear it well when the hot wind blows.
It’s that screech and moan of an old windmill,
Standing there alone at the bottom of the hill.

There’s no electricity or fuel to make it spin,
All it takes is just a little wind.
It doesn’t take much only a slight breeze,
And that Aermotor will turn with the greatest of ease.

You’ll see it standing there as the sun goes down,
Then the doves start to roll in and gather around.
As that windmill moans and the water flows out,
You’ll know that won the West without a doubt.

Wind Power In Texas

Wind power has a long history in Texas. West Texas State University began wind energy research in 1970 and led to the formation of the Alternative Energy Institute (AEI) in 1977. AEI has been a major information resource about wind energy for Texas.[3]

There are many wind farms in Texas and, as of March 2010, Texas has 9,410 MW of capacity, which is the most wind power capacity of any U.S. state, followed by Iowa with 3,670 MW.[2] The expanding wind power market will help Texas meet its 2015 renewable energy goal of 5,000 new megawatts of power from renewable sources.

Wind power in Texas consists of many wind farms with a total installed nameplate capacity of 9,727 MW[1] from over 40 different projects. Texas produces the most wind power of any U.S. state, followed by Iowa with 3,670 MW.

The Roscoe Wind Farm (781 MW) is the world's largest wind farm. Other large wind farms in Texas include: Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center, Sherbino Wind Farm, Capricorn Ridge Wind Farm, Sweetwater Wind Farm, Buffalo Gap Wind Farm, King Mountain Wind Farm, Desert Sky Wind Farm, Wildorado Wind Ranch, and the Brazos Wind Farm.

Have You Visited The Annex?
Wondering what the heck is The Annex?

Remember when we went from the main building to the Auto Mechanics Shop, or Mr. Fieldings Wood Shop, or Mr. Gibbs Band Hall, and even out to the Cafeteria?  Those trips from the main building to pick up Slips, work on cars, build wood crafts, practice music and eat lunch were trips to MHS Annex Facilities.

The Sixty-Fiver's Website Annex is simply a Facility.  And I do mean SIMPLE...Simple for you to get there with a Click of Your Mouse.  Once you are there it is SIMPLE to Return HERE...another Click of Your Mouse.  Just Click on the TITLE ... example 2010 Girls Weekend Retreat Review...and there you are at Last Years Retreat. You can browse around the Annex by Clicking on the Page Titles...example 45th Reunion...and there you are at the 45th Reunion.  You can continue browsing by scrolling down to the bottom of the page to the ARCHIVES and clicking on a Month...example FEBRUARY...and there you are...all the posts done in February.

Watch for NEW Additions To The Annex...as I am moving things from my Blog SuKnitWitty where the 45th Reunion Information Station was setup.  Also, there will be NEW Additions from here at The Main 65'er Website added to the Annex.  This will help keep the Left Sidebar List uncluttered.

Mike Smith

*"The bottom line is too many people work all of their lives thinking that when they reach that grand old retirement age they're going to stop what they are doing jump in the RV and "live the life of Riley".

But folks I'm here to tell you that might just not be the case. So, my advice to my fellow classmates is this.

"Lay by in store for tomorrow but live for today!"

Live each day as if it's your last here on this earth. Don't put off doing something you really want to do because it's not a convenient time. And take life with a "grain of salt" never letting it get so stressful that you can't enjoy it.

I've always believed that humor is the" best medicine" and will cure just about anything! I look back on my years here on this planet and I can truthfully say I have very few regrets. Not that I wouldn't change a few things if the opportunity were to present itself. But my basic philosophy would stay the same."

Introducing....

It is well known that the Class of 1965 has a special bond of closeness that began for many in kindergarten and developed through the school years in Monahans and Wickett.  The wonderment of this bond is that it includes so many...those who came and stayed...those who moved away...those who were younger and older...and those who we will never forget!

Ray Cooper ~ Class of 1966

Ray Cooper is a man of many 'Redneck Talents',
and has the Website to prove it.

Cooper’s Redneck Kennel is a family affair. While started by Ray back in 1981 it has become an endeavor of the whole family over the years. Here’s a little information about the family and their involvement in this work of passion and dedication to the breed.

Ray has been around bird dogs all his life. As a 4 year old he slipped out of the house one day while his Mom napped and wondered into a pasture of wild Brahman Cattle. The family English Setter, Gene Dog, fought off the herd for over two hours till the neighbors found Ray sitting on a tree stump crying, with Gene Dog completely exhausted from fighting the wild critters to near death. From those early years on Ray had dogs and mostly hunting dogs throughout his life. Then in 1980 he discovered Vizslas, getting his first in 1981 and not being without them since. His love of hunting and field trials led Ray to competing with his Vizslas in both AKC and American Field trials and eventually co-founding the National Vizsla Association with his good friend Bruce Hale in 1990, hosting the first National Classic in the Spring of 1991. This year the NVA celebrated its 15th National Championship recognized by the American Field. In addition to campaigning his Vizslas in field trials over most of the Western US, Ray has also sold puppies to bird hunters all over the country and into Canada.  Visit Ray's Website for more on Coopers Redneck Kennels.

Ray is also a Horse Trainer with a stable of Trail and

Field Trial Horses.
Ray has  been a steady contributor to The 65'er Website with...

The wraps will be taken off the 1964 edition of the Monahans Lobos Friday night when they take the field against the charges of Coach Dan Anderegg of Crane High School.  The Lobos will be in their first outing under the coaching of Head Coach Dough Ethridge.
Crane will be operating this year without the services of their great quarterback B. Elder who graduated in the spring.  The Lobos, on the other hand will be blessed with the assistance of their letterman field general Wayne McPeak who copped just about every honor a high school football player can earn last year.
Flanking McPeak will be some of the better back in the district last year in the persons of Jerry McLain and Gary Wingo.

First Play from scrimmage for the Lobos found quarterback Wayne mcPeak (22) rolling out to his left for an eight-yard pickup against the Golden Cranes.  The play carried to the Lobo 42.  Inopportunie penalties and a missed blocking assignment here and there gave the Cranes a 10-3 squeaker win.  The film of the Lobo-Crane clash will be shown Tuesday at 7:30 at the Lobo Booster Club meeting.  The meeting will be at the High School Cafeteria, a scouting report on the Colorado City Wolves will be given.  All interested persons are invited to attend.  (caption under photo from The Sandstorm)

CALLING ALL SANDSTORM STAFFERS!!! YOU'RE JOBS ARE OPEN!!! NO EXERCISES IN Copyreading, Proofreading, Makeup or Headline Writing GIVEN!!!

Please, contact Sue Pittman McPeak through CONTACT US tab.  She just wants to be a Reporter again!  Really, Ya'll, just like in 1965, this paper relies on NEWS!

Anyone with News can become a Reporter for THE 65'ER SANDSTORM.  Although Miss Katherine Kugle is not here to oversee the content, she taught her students well on the Topics for inclusion in THE SANDSTORM.  The following articles are some examples of acceptable Photo and Written Journalism!

Billy Ivy Snagged by Jellyfish

"Yeah, Peggy and I went fishing in the surf last evening and all that was caught was my ankle.  But you know it's not the catching that matters much, it's the just being there and enjoying life."  Billy Ivy and wife Peggy Lanehart (1967) live in Fulton, Texas just 30 miles North of Corpus Christi and right across the street from Rockport, Texas.

Billy is retired and says he doesn't do much of anything and he's getting real good at it.  He retired a fews years back when he was injured on the job and had back surgery.  Casting that fishin pole is his main job along with being 'The Guy In Charge' of the homefront.  Peggy's still working a real job and doing her job at home, too.  Sounded like she might be ready to Fire the Guy In Charge!

For more about Billy Ivy go to his Classmate Profile.  You can leave him a message there or make a comment about that boat.  In fact ask him to tell you about that boat and the others he toured not long ago.     Interview by Sue Pittman, Sandstorm Reporter.

Class of 1965 Veterans

At the time of this First Edition of the 65'ER SANDSTORM...there are Twenty-three Classmates Signed Up who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

You can find them on the Classmate Profiles.  They have a USA Flag icon beside their names.  There will be more 65'ers in the Military as others SignUp.

Thank-you 1965 Classmates for Your Service!

One Door Closes and Another Opens

Not just one door is closing at MHS this summer, but all the doors of the High School Building as we knew it in 1965.  A new High School has been built right behind the old high school that was erected in 1950.  This reporter toured MHS for the last time this past June.  A Photo Slideshow is presented in the 65'er Photo Gallery.

New Doors will open for the Present Day and Future Graduates of Monahans High School.  The Class of 1965 wishes for them Lasting Memories of MHS!

Does the Lobo Baseball Sign on the Mathematics Door bring a 1965 Baseball Player to mind?  I thought it might, so I did some detective work on a couple of those guys that use to knock em over the fence.

Captain of the 1965 Lobo Baseball Team Keith Bailey has spent his summer recovering from heart surgery.  Carol Ann Baker Adams reported that he's been through some rough times, but is doing pretty well.  Keith lives the simple life that some of us dream of....like Wayne McPeak.  That'd be...NO Computer and NO Phone!

Now, we know where this Article of Journalism would be if this PittmanMcPeak Reporter let that other McPeak have his Dream Come True.  Right!  NOT HERE!

So, I'm thinking about sending Wayne to Keith's for some of that Simple NoPuter-NoPhone Life.  However, since Keith has NO EMAIL or CELL PHONE, I can't forewarn him of the McPeak Invasion!  So, OMG, I'm going to have to get out the Big Chief Tablet and pencil and 'Handwrite a Letter'... and without Spell check!

I'm sure Keith won't mind my bad spellin', eraser marks and coffee spills.  In fact, I bet he wouldn't mind getting a whole bunch of  letters written on Big Chief paper with coffee spills.  So, let's all fill Keiths Mail Box with letters, pictures, news, ads about Verizon's newest Cell Phone and Dell's latest laptop.  Then he'll be as informed and insane as the rest of us.  You can write Keith at this address:  125 Funston Terrace, Reno, Texas 76542
