I graduated from U of H and taught for several years in Houston, but when Don's engineering took him into construction management, we started moving from job to job. We have lived in 43 places in 52 years. I honestly dont' know why our kids want to wander the world since we have already pretty much done it.
We lived aboard our boat for 12 years in Gloucester, MA and traveled about 4,500 miles through the waterways in Canada and the US to New Orleans. We have done a lot of cruising in MA, New Hampshire and Maine. The trip through the Erie Canal was a huge highlight, but the most impressive part of our cruising was down the mighty Mississippi. I know it is a cliche, but mighty is the only thing you can call it when you are on it.
On the way thru Aberdeen, MS, we anchored at Blue Bluff and checked the place out. Found our place here on the river - and bought it within 2 days. (we are nothing if not impulsive. We were headed for the Panama Canal. That year we took the boat to a marina in Biloxi while Amy was working in New Orleans and John was going to school in Pascagoula. Very nice winter.
When we got back to Aberdeen we built our house ourselves. Since we had built the boat, we thought we could do that and frankly, building a house is far easier.
We had to go away to work to finish paying for the place and lived in our motorhome for 4 years.
I had been doing metalwork since 2004 over the last few years and we decided to turn it into a business. We still do several shows a year and our handcrafted dining and serving pieces and bar ware are available in several galleries including the National Ornamental Metal Museum.
We are failing retirement but having a great time with the garden, the boat and our metalwork.
