IN MEMORY

Randall Russom

RANDALL BOOTH RUSSOM passed away January 12, 1992, due to complications from a brain tumor. He and his wife Jamie (fellow ’65 classmate) were married 21 years and have one son, Troy, who lives in Granbury, TX, with his wife and 2 daughters. In addition, he was survived by his mother, Betty, who passed away in 2002, his father, Booth, and sister, Brynn McClanahan (Class of ’70).

Randall attended Hardin-Simmons before joining the Navy in 1969. He was in submarine service stationed in Vallejo, California, Idaho Falls, Idaho, Groton, Connecticut, and Honolulu, Hawaii, until 1982. At that time, he became a start-up engineer at Comanche Peak Power Station outside of Granbury, Texas, where he worked until his illness caused him to take long term disability.

Jamie shared the following memories of Randall…..

“He was a devoted provider and family man…a man of his word. If he said a thing was so, it was so! Randall was an avid hunter and a competitive marksman. He was dedicated to whatever work he was doing and had a wonderful dry sense of humor. I had hoped to grow old with him.”

I remember Randall warmly. We hung out a lot in the 8th and 9th grades. We both loved shooting and he was with me when I got my first big-bore rifle, an old 1891 Argentine Mauser that I ordered from Monkey Ward for $18.95. After we got some ammo at Lyle's pawn shop, our first victim was a dove that exploded into a cloud of feathers when I hit him. I used to travel some with his family and went to Merkel with him a couple of times. He had great parents. We also double-dated but those stories aren't for publication.

My favorite memory about Randall relates to Maude Adam's math class in the 9th grade. Randall and I favored each other in a general way. We were the same size, both had blonde hair that we kept in a flat-top, and , unfortunately for Randall, he sat at the same desk that I did in the class following mine. Ms Adams used to get so frustrated and mad at me that she took it out on poor Randall during the next period.

Randall was a great kid. When I heard that he and Jamie were getting married, I smiled because he, like most of the other guys that I knew, thought she was gorgeous and he was the one who snared her. I remember Randall fondly and well.
