AUSTIN WHITFIELD died in Monahans, Texas, on September 2, 1980.
He was 33 years of age and was a life-long resident of Monahans. On March 2, 1965, he was married to Yvonne Skinner in Odessa. In addition to his wife, Yvonne, he was also survived by 4 sons, David, Donald, Allen, and Austin III; one brother, Freddie; one sister, Helen Ruth Johnson; and his parents, Austin, Sr. and Juanita.
Austin was employed as a truck driver. He was a member of the Church of God in Christ.

I remember Austin.. he went to the "black" school until "they" came to high school at MHS. He was a teammate on the basketball team.. quick.. hard working.. we named him "Frisky".. He was one of my first black friends.. I didn't know it at the time, but i learned a lot from him.. I hope to honor what he taught me by always realizing the color of a man's blood before I notice the color of his skin.. Thank you Austin.. be safe... rj
