Albert F. "Pete" Mahan (1936-2022) - Class Of 1954

After a brief illness, Albert Farrow Mahan, better known as Pete, died at Baptist South in his hometown of Montgomery Alabama on May 23, 2022. Pete was predeceased by his mother Florence Booher Mahan and his father, Albert Mahan.

On March 3, 1936, he was born and was 86 years old. Pete was a graduate of Lanier High School Class of 1954 where he excelled in track and was a member of Lanier's State Championship track team.

Pete furthered his educated at Samford University and after receiving his degree he obtained a Master's in Education from the University of Alabama. While at Samford he had the good fortune to meet Elizabeth Beauchamp from Trussville. She would become his life's partner and come September they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

He coached and taught at several schools around the state before he and Elizabeth moved to Miami and Pete became an Air Traffic Controller. He then transferred to the F.A.A. in the Washington, D.C. area and finished his career with the U.S. Secret Service.

Following retirement, Pete engaged in his lifelong dream of owning a book store and later added a second store in Northern Virginia. After many years in the D.C. area, Elizabeth and Pete decided to move south and purchased a book store in Valdosta, Georgia. Both were avid golfers and in addition to golf, they enjoyed Valdosta State sports and life back in the deep south. After 17 years in Valdosta, the Mahans decided to sell their home and the book store and move to Pete's hometown of Montgomery.

Pete is survived by two sisters, Joyce Dingman of Madison, Wisconsin, and Martha Haines of Arlington, Virginia. He is also survived by his beloved dog Spike who was his constant companion and they enjoyed walks four times a day.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to their many friends and neighbors who have been so supportive of both Elizabeth and Pete over the past few months. Special thanks go to Jaunia Pearson who took loving care of Pete during his most critical illness.

A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date.
