Daniel Stone Obituary       August 20, 1954 – May 23, 2011

PILOT MOUNTAIN      Daniel (Dan) Joseph Stone, age 56, of Pilot Mountain, died Monday, May 23, 2011. He was born August 20, 1954 to Eleanor Sipe Stone and the late Dr. I. Frank Stone. Mr. Stone was a lifelong resident of Pilot Mountain and was actively involved in Boy Scout Troop 545 where he earned his Eagle Scout Award in 1968. He remained active in that troop as an adult and also in the Dogwood District and in the Old Hickory Council. He has been Committee Chairman of Troop 545 since 1996. He received the District Award of Merit in 2001 and was a member of the Old Hickory Council Executive Board in 2002. The 2010 class of Eagle Scouts for the Old Hickory Council was named for Mr. Stone at the March recognition and awards banquet. Mr. Stone was a 1972 graduate of Hargrave Military Academy, where he served as captain of the Corps of Cadets before graduating with honors from Elon University in 1976. Mr. Stone retired in 2004 from the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation after 26 years as a special agent, including four years as the special agent in charge of the governor's security detail. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Pilot Mountain where he had been a Sunday school teacher, president of the United Methodist Men, a member of the administrative board and of the board of trustees. Mr. Stone was also a member of the Surry Community College Board of Trustees for many years. During that time he was both the vice chairman and chairman. He is survived by his wife, Sallie Arnold Stone of the home; daughter: Sarah Eleanor Stone of Pilot Mountain; son: Andrew Joseph Stone of Winston-Salem; mother: Eleanor S. Stone; brothers: William & Terry Stone and mother-in-law: Sarah Arnold. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 3:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church of Pilot Mountain.
