Carolyn Haines Obituary

Carolyn Hanna Haines was born Feb. 19, 1939 to Henry C. and Alma E. Anderson and passed away Nov. 26, 2024 in Urbana, IL. She grew up in the Worcester, MA area and attended Northfield School. She received a BA in English from Earlham College, where she sang in the Concert Choir and met her future husband, Charlie. They were married in 1961 and spent most of their lives in the Rochester, NY area. She earned a Master's Degree in Human Resources and worked at Taylor Instruments Co. She then worked in fundraising for RIT, Sonnenberg Gardens, Genesee Country Village & Museum.

She proudly served on numerous boards, many of which combined her horticulture & fundraising skills. Carolyn's greatest passion was horticulture. She lectured on diverse gardening topics, she ran a garden design business and her gardens were well-known. In the winter, she and Charlie went to Sanibel, FL where they loved the natural beauty of the island. She valued wildlife, nature, animals, and loved to quilt and knit. In 2008, they moved to Illinois to be closer to their grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her husband Charles Wills Haines; she is survived by her two daughters: Marie (David) Leonard of Trappe, MD and Karen (Mark) Linder of Onarga, IL and their two children; her sister Marie (Arthur) Dessureau of Barre, VT; plus many nieces and nephews.

Two Celebrations of Her Life will be held: Sat., Dec. 21, 2024 at 10:30am at the Urbana Champaign Friend's Meetinghouse and Sun., Dec. 22, 2024 from 2-4pm at ClarkLindsey in Urbana, IL.
