CANNING’S ADIEU

If anyone reading this owes me money, consider your debt paid, I won’t be needing the cash. In the early morning hours of October 7th, I was sitting by myself on my porch watching a lightning storm. The Lord tapped me on the shoulder and said, “Time to come home my good and faithful Servant.”

“Lord this is kind of sudden and I’ll have to leave some things undone and people to say good bye to and some unanswered questions.”

“Mr. Canning, you have completed all the tasks that I wanted you to. Secondly, you don’t have to say good-bye to people who love you and will always have you in their heart. As to your unanswered questions I assure you the answer is not ‘42’.”

“Did you read “The Hitcher’s Guide to the Galaxy Lord?”

“Tim, I read everything and hear everything. What are your questions.”

“Lord I never had lots of material possessions or money and I was fine with that. You gave me my Wife Chris a Godly woman. Bill Keri, Jonathan and Ryan who are great children and then Grandchildren. I am a wealthy man or was, but did I make a difference to people, did I give enough to others?”

“The most valuable thing I give my children is time. You can waste it, use it or let it go by, but you can’t save it up like money, for a future date. You gave to others the most precious thing you had, your

time. Time to listen, time to tell them about Me and time to help them with their needs both physical and spiritual. Remember 4th St. and the Old Town Mission and what’s that become? You took people in need into your home and you and Chris treated them like family.

Speaking of family, I must admit watching you and Tim McKeever Sr. and Junior interact was always entertaining. That came out ok by most standards. Let me tell you what people are going to be saying about you in the coming days.”

“You can do that?”

“Remember who you are talking to.”

“Sorry, I should have known.”

“Loving Husband and Father, Man of God, Brother, Friend. He saved my life. I don’t know where I’d be if it wasn’t for Tim. He was always willing to take the time to share Christ with me and not act like there was something wrong with me.

Your Brother-in-Law will tell people about April 16th, 1987 when he asked you could God forgive him for all his misdeeds and you said, let me introduce you to my friend Jesus.” It changed his life and he has no qualms about sharing that night with anyone.

So, yes Tim I’d say you made a difference. That’s quiet a legacy to leave. As I asked, you were a fisher of men and they have become fishers of men too. What do you have to say to that Mr. Canning?”

“So long and thanks for all the fish.”
