Tommy was born on May 1, 1972 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois the son of the late David Ray and Lila Sue (Elliston) Sledge. He married Pamela (Cooper) Stites on May 10, 2015 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.

Surviving family members include his maternal grandmother: Betty Elliston of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; brothers: Edward Sledge of Mt. Vernon, Illinois and Chris Richardson of Mt.
