Muscatine Great River Days 2009
Posted Thursday, July 9, 2009 10:43 AM

Anyone up for a "party after the reunion" get-together? Come help support the Muscatine Great River Days festival - that may, indeed, not have a future without a sincere and grand show of support from the community - to save it from dying off.

My group, W900, will be a featured act on main stage this summer, August 1st, from 5:30PM - 7:00PM, to help bring a little "party" to the fair.

Stop down, check out the goings-on and show some support for a 50-year Muscatine tradition to save it from the scrap bin.

SEEYA'!

That's great, Aaron! We'll try to be there. I hope Erin brings Waylon--he's sooo cute!

My Great River Days memories

The teacups--no one could make those spin faster than I could.

I went back to M-town for Great River Days a few years ago expressly for the purpose of entering my son in the watermelon-eating contest. He could totally have rocked the under-age-two category. Unfortunately, he was too young to enter. But he did get his picture in the paper gorging himself on watermelon.

On the GRD schedule I didn't see the boat parade. Does that not happen anymore? I'd like to see it again and show my kids.

damn, this sounds like fun. there's a slight chance that i'll be in iowa while this is going down...but it may be the wrong part of iowa. at any rate, have a blast!

most of my GRD memories involve the sketchy carnivals that used to set up on the riverfront. diseased goldfish, anyone?

I still want Optimist Club lemonade...it was the best. I also remember the pedal tractor pull my brother participated in. And when there were lots of stores downtown, weren't there sidewalk sales? I used to get all of my shoes for the year at Wilsons (is that right?)

I have many memories from great river days, all good ones. I recall listening to some semi well known bands on the river front. Walking along the various carni games, losing my money. Simply enjoying the summer air along the river.

W900 at GRD

Several of you who couldn't make it to GRD have asked me what I thought of the W900 show, so I thought I'd give a recap. Aaron and the guys were fabulous--talented musicians and entertainers. Aaron's guitar playing is amazing, and both he and Jeremy Colschen (who was at MHS with us for a while) are great singers, too.

They played "rockified country and countrified rock"; the best songs were Aaron's originals, but I also liked what they did with some of the covers. When they headed into Journey's "Faithfully," I rolled my eyes and leaned back for a nap, but then all of a sudden they doubled the tempo--and it turns out "Faithfully" can really rock! Wow, those guitar riffs sound awesome played really fast (at least the way Aaron does it).

Any of you who like dancing and live music should try to catch one of W900's gigs in Davenport, or try to get them to come down and play again somewhere in Muscatine.
