Phillip Porter

Phillip Wayne Porter, age 51 of Okmulgee passed away peacefully at his home on February 7, 2010 following a long courageous battle with cancer.Phillip was born November 21, 1958 in Muskogee, Ok to Robert and Fannie (Jackson) Porter. Mr. Porter attended Muskogee Public Schools graduating with the class of 1977. Phillip furthered his education at Northeastern State University earning a BS in Biology with minors in mathematics, chemistry and psychology and a MS in Educational Administration.Phillip began his teaching career at Okmulgee Middle School in 1983 as a science teacher. In 1991 he was hired as an instructor of general science at OSU Okmulgee. Phillip later implemented and taught microbiology, anatomy, physiology and chemistry classes at the college where he remained employed until his death.Phillip was very passionate about education and found his profession truly rewarding. Students as well as fellow employees regarded Phillip as a student-centered, caring, motivated, and dedicated professional educator. He received many distinguished honors throughout his career including Distinguished Teaching Awards and Certificates of Excellence and Performance.Phillip was a member of Uganda Martrys Catholic Church. He was active in the community serving on the Board of the Okmulgee Education Foundation, Board of Directors of the Anne Moroney Youth Shelter and the Marian Academy School Board. He was affiliated with several professional organizations including the Oklahoma Academy of Science. Phillip has been a state ranked tennis player and for several years coached the Okmulgee Middle School tennis team. He was very involved with youth outside of the classroom coaching girls summer league softball. He was an avid OU football fan and fisherman.Phillip is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Lavern Owens and a brother, Robert Porter Jr.Survivors include his wife of 25 years Louise (Gouthier) Porter, daughter Lauren and son Colby; brothers Jerry and Mike Porter of Benecia, California, Albert and Raymond Porter of Muskogee and Dennis Porter of Oklahoma City; sisters Alice Hitchye of Oklahoma City, Jeanette Ceasar, Maria Rowland and twin Phyllis Porter of Muskogee.Other survivors include his mother and father in law, Rudolph and Cleo Gouthier, sisters and brothers in law, Gary and Carolyn Calip, Pat Wilson, Sandy and Rose Gouthier, Darryl and Jacqueline Lyons of Okmulgee and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.The Funeral Mass will commence on Friday, February 12, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. in the St. Anthony Catholic Church.
