Mary Rebecca Smith, formerly of Muskogee, died August 18, 2008, at her home in Oklahoma City. She was 41.
A wake will be held Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Foster-Petering Funeral Home at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 22, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 321 North Virginia, Muskogee, OK.
Becky was born to Mary Margaret and Robert Junie Smith of Muskogee on July 27, 1967. She was their youngest of eight children and she brought with her their renewed joy and delight of new life, which was to be her gift to all who loved her throughout her lifetime.
She was an active, curious, self-sufficient, little girl who swam and played softball. Her softball record of wins and losses are beyond recovery but it was well known that she was often called on to substitute for other teams.
During high school she attended Oklahoma Girl's State and was a member of the National Honor Society. She was an active member of the French Club and traveled to France in her junior year.
An outstanding math student, Becky studied at the University of Oklahoma, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M University, and Central State University. She parlayed her math acumen into a career at H.R. Block in Oklahoma City, where she worked as a tax specialist.
Becky was a multi-talented woman who had many interests. Her chocolate chip cookies were a family favorite and were unrivaled. She loved movies, especially black and white films from the 1930s and ‘40s, and possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of many aspects of film history and culture.
Becky was taken from her family and friends all too suddenly. Words are insufficient to describe the void she has left in their hearts and lives. She was a source of energy to each of her family members—a principal resource for encouragement, understanding, enlightenment, and abiding love and respect.
She is survived by her mother, Mary Margaret Smith of Muskogee and five brothers and two sisters: Margie Inderrieden and her husband Dan of Broken Arrow; Junie Robert Smith and his wife Tracy of Del City; Patrick Smith of Charlotte, NC; John Clayton Smith and his wife Terry of Muskogee; Stephen Smith and his wife Linda of Oklahoma City; Bruce Smith of Charlotte, NC; and Elizabeth Smith of Arlington, VA. Her father predeceased her in 2006. She is also survived by her aunts--Mary Lou Ziegenfuss, Elizabeth Hickey, and Fannie Livingston, all of Muskogee, and Hope Mayes of Tampa, FL; her uncles—James R. Jones of Washington, DC, and Patrick Jones of Irvine, CA; nieces Adrian Griffith, Natalie Inderrieden, and Joanne, Leanne, and Maddie Griffith; nephews Nicholas Inderrieden, and Thomas, Calvin, and Victor Smith; and cousins Sue Harrison and Stacy Robinson.
Wake service will be at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Fosters' Ivory Chapel.
The Smith family asks that memorials be made in her name to the American Heart Association.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, August 22, 2008 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church with Father Brian Brooks officiating. Burial will follow at Greenhill Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Foster-Petering Funeral Home.
