Jeanne Conard Heid

1923 - 2018

4th generation Napan, Jeanne Conard Heid, age 94, died January 4, 2018. Her Clendenin family ancestors were early settlers/farmers in the Napa Valley. Born in San Bernadino on April 22,1923, Jeanne spent her early childhood years in San Mateo, and was cared for by a family friend following the untimely death of her mother, Marie. At age 15 she came to Napa and lived with her aunt and uncle throughout her high school years. While a member of the Napa High School class of 1941, Jeanne met her future partner in life, Frank A. Heid ( a native Napan himself, class of 1940). Their first date was attendance at the World’s Fair in San Francisco. Jeanne worked for the phone company following high school, living in a small room at what is now Cedar Gables Inn. She and Frank married on January 16,1944, in Altus, Oklahoma where he was stationed for Army Air Corps training. They returned to Napa following the end of WWII and remained throughout their 71 years of marriage. As a busy homemaker, with four children, her family was always the first priority. She also, on occasion, worked as office manager at Heid and Heid Engineering & Surveying in Napa. Additionally, she and several high school friends enjoyed and sustained a 50 year ‘lunch group’ which offered hours of friendship, conversation and laughter. In 1973, Jeanne was awarded an Associate Arts degree(honors at graduation)from Napa Valley College, especially enjoying her Art History classes. What began as her love of ‘antiquing’ and searching for ‘oldies but goodies’ eventually evolved into a business, Granny’s Attic, which she and Frank enjoyed immensely, even traveling across the country in search of ‘treasures with potential’. Whether at the store on Solano Avenue or participation in various antique shows in the bay area, Jeanne enjoyed the people she met along the way who shared her appreciation of ‘treasures’. All things musical brought happiness to her life. This favorite pastime was definitely passed on to her children and grandchildren who have participated(and continue to do so)in a variety of musical endeavors, both vocal and instrumental!

For those who knew her through the years, all were very aware of her kindness, thoughtfulness and terrific sense of humor! Jeanne had a caring spirit and generous heart. She is survived by her four children: Nancy (Dave) Wildman; Joyce (John) Wiggin; Beth (Rob) Wright; Bruce (Carole) Heid and grandchildren Jeremy, Sarah & Christine Wildman; Erin (Evan) Schumacher; Allison (Jamie) Kent: Ian, Tyler (Jacyln) and Lucas Heid; and great-grandchildren Cadel and Claire Schumacher and Madeline Kent. The family thanks Maria for her loving assistance in the final several months of Jeanne’s life. A private service for family is planned. Donations in her name may be made to the donor’s charity of choice.
