Barbara Steele - Class Of 1948

Barbara Steele

Former Napa resident Barbara E. Steele, 73, died Aug. 5, 2003, at her home in Modesto. A native of Petaluma, born Dec. 6, 1929, Barbara was raised in Napa, attending Napa High School and Napa Junior College. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 1952 and finished her M.A. in education, counseling and administrative credentials at San Francisco State University and California State University, Stanislaus. She was a 50-year resident of Modesto.

Barbara's career in education began at Thomas Downey High School teaching physical education. She became director of student activities before transferring to Grace M. Davis High School in 1963. She was dean of girls for many years and then dean of students for one year before moving into counseling in 1979. She retired in 1994 after 41 years with Modesto City Schools.

Barbara once said, "Schools have their concerns, as do many other businesses and professions, however there are many many fine students who attend school regularly, assume responsibility for their learning, and achieve significantly both as students and individuals. Not enough of these students are acknowledged for the accomplishements." In 1996, she received the "Woman of Distinction Award" in recognition of her accomplishements in the area of education by Soroptimist International.

An avid Cal Bears fan and longtime season ticket holder, Barbara was often accused of having blood that flowed "blue and gold." After retiring, she enjoyed traveling and RVing, golf, her garden, and her morning paper, coffee and crossword puzzle ritual. Her affiliations included the University of California Alumni Association, Phi Delta Kappa, California State University, Stanislaus Chapter, California Retired Teacher's Association, and she was past captain, Modesto Muni Niners Women's Golf Club.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Helen Steele, and has no surviving relatives. She is survived by her extended family members and many dear friends.
