Glen moved to Donelson when he was about 8 or 9 years old. He and his family had moved from somewhere up north. I remember because when he said "pajamas" it sounded like "pah-JAM-as" instead of like we said it, "pah-JAH-mas." He and I went to Donelson Elementary and as soon as he transferred in (3rd or 4th grade) he instantly was accepted and well-liked. One of those instantly popular kids, you know? I recall that at DHS he remained popular, but he and I had different circles of friends and I sort of lost track of him. I remember he married Ms. Atchley's daughter, became a fireman, and died when he was struck by a motor vehicle while riding a bicycle to work. I saw Mr. Atchley about six years ago and he told me that they have never quite recovered from Glen's death, they loved him so. Me? It changed my life a bit, too. I had also been an avid bicyclist, fearlessly zooming in and out of traffic, even making long distance rides like to Cookeville on US 70. After Glen was hit, I quit doing that.

Glen was one of my best friends. You just couldn't help but like him. I nearly fainted for the first time when I heard he had been killed about 2 years after it happened. Just a true shock to the soul. Glen had that imposing grin and giggle I will never forget. He was just a good friend that I still think of often.

I remember hearing it on the radio going to work that day. Very shocking. I had met Glen soon after I came into the 7th grade. I was riding bicycles also at that time. I still miss him.

Glen was a good guy, Kenny. I still miss him, too. Darn it!

Stick to the Greenway if you're riding a bike!

C'ya soon, Kenny.

I didn't know Glen but do know that he married Sally Atchley and her brother was my roomate on and off after I came home from the Navy. It was devestating to the Atchley family when Glen was taken so early in life. I know he left a big whole in the world when he left.

I realize my comment is very late in the string and will likely be missed, but in honor of Glen, I wanted to say that he and I were close for several years. We spent time at each other's houses during high school, and I considered him a good friend. We also rode bicycles together. He'd sometimes stay with me at MTSU. He was a good man, and I miss him to this day; I'm surprised how often he comes to mind--especially when I'm cycling, or when I get back to Donelson. When he was killed I recalled the countless times I'd ridden my bicycle on the same stretch of highway. He left a hole in my life, and I hurt for his dear wife and parents. I recall he was from Corpus Cristi, TX; I believe his dad was a private pilot. I do remember one time we waxed Glen's car with airplane wax because it was all he had on hand at the time; it was called slipstream or something. Yellow car, wasn't it? A Mustang ? Not sure. Sally, if there's any chance in the world you are reading this, know that I still remember you and Glen. He was a dear friend, I loved him like a brother, he made a difference in my life, and I should have told you this about 4 decades ago.
