I remember Jerry as a tough, sort of no-nonsense kind of guy. But he also had his sensitive side. I recall him talking about a girl he was dating whose father was a preacher. Jerry said when he went to hear her father deliver a sermon that "it brought tears to his eyes."
Does anyone know any details on what happened to Jerry. We ran around together off/on during our junior/senior years. We double dated a few times. He was always cracking jokes. We used to deliver newspapers together, we would have to fill up all the news racks in Donelson at three in the morning. We keep each other awake by cracking jokes. Church and doing the right things in life were always important to him. I don't recall him ever having any bad habits. He was indeed a Stand UP Guy. Life took us in diffrent directions after DHS.
Jerry was always a nice guy with a great smile. I learned from other classmates that Jerry worked for Heil Quaker in Lewisburg for about 10 years until the company moved to Canada. About a month or so later he learned he had cancer, and spent the next few years fighting the disease with clinical trial participation in addition the the usual chemo/radiation treatments. Jerry is survived by 3 sons, Sammy, Stephen, and Michael Pate. God rest his soul.
Jerry and I are cousins. My mother and his father are first cousins. We always called each other "cuz" while in high school.
I did not know that Jerry had passed until I got involved with this great website. My mother had not heard about Jerry either. He will be missed by all of us. He was a great person, and I am proud that he was part of my family.
