I've been advised by Tom Putnam that John is being carried by the NSU ROTC Alumni as deceased.  A search of the Social Security Death Index reflects a John L. Weffenstette, born 31 Aug 1943, died on 11 Jan 2004 while residing i Virden, Macoupin, IL.  That fits and may be the same as the classmate.
