Bob served as a Signalman 2CL with a naval groundforce unit in Viet Nam.  He was killed in action on 08/11/1968 just 6 years and 2 months from walking down "the hill" with all of us in the class of '62.  Tragic.

When I learned that Bob Bouchet, one of the two "Big B's" on the basketball team, had died in Vietnam, I started crying and couldn't stop - which, I assure you, is not like me at all.  I cannot say Bob was a close friend, since I never hung out with him outside of school.  But I was in the same Home Room with him for four years and of course played basketball with him.  He was an incredible physical specimen and gifted athlete, who could run all day and all night.  The only player who could keep up with him on our all-game, full-court press, was Larry Faiman, and if I remember correctly, Larry got terrible shin splints doing it.  Bob was a star in all the sports he played (football, until he decided not to continue playing, basketball, and track).  But more important he was a great guy, more mature than the rest of us, never complaining about anything, quiet, and modest. Probably very few classmates knew him any better than I did, but I am sure everyone respected him.  Before basketball practice, I would frequently challenge him to a one-on-one game, as if the 5' 9", underweight kid I was then (I grew 2 1/2 inches and bulked out a bit in college) had a chance against his 6'5'' fully developed frame.  He would chase me around as I tried every fancy move I had (thinking I was Bob Cousy) and he would call me a gnat as he tried to swat away everything I shot.  I was able to get a few shots off, though, and when one went in, he would feign anger and threaten to do me physical harm.  We would both crack up at that, however, since he was as gentle a giant as ever walked this earth.  What a terrible waste of a wonderful human being with such great potential.

Bob will always be The Sun, Moon, and Stars,  He will live in my heart forever....
