Phil was a neighbour who lived one house over from me on the dead end lower part of High street below the tourist park. More than a neighbour, Phil was a very good friend. His parents were kind to my mother and I when my Dad died in 1959. We didn't have a TV and they invited me over all the time to watch TV. One of the shows they all watched was Twilight Zone. When it was time to go home, I would be terrified to walk 2 houses over in the dark, after watching that show. In the winter we played road hockey on our dead end street and in the summer we would go down the trail from our back yards to play in the little park at Chatham and Front Street. We had a great group of friends towards the end of high school and for a couple of years after, before most of us dispersed for other places. They included Darlene Percival, another neighbour who lived on the corner of Willow and Front streets. The others were Don Dozzi, Bob Zanon, Dan Pasacreta, Stan Divorski and myself. Phil was well liked by everyone. He was friendly, easy to be with, and had a wickedly funny sense of humour. Phil's career was in insurance. He started in Nelson and I believe worked in Calgary for a short time, He got the travel bug and went to London England and got a job in insurance there. Then the travel bug bit again and with a friend, they did a trip to Egypt, Iraq, Iran and then to Australia. It was there he met Kim, his wife of 53 years. Kim had a wicked sense of humour also, and they were the perfect partners for one another. We all saw Phil and Kim at the 2013 LVR 63-64-65 reunion. We all had a great time catching up, and continued to stay in touch by email and FaceTime. Phil would regularly send me funny things and I last heard from him in April 2024. It was a great shock to get an email from Kim to notify me of Phil's passing May 17 2024, after a 10 month battle with cancer and spending the last 4 weeks of his life in hospital. It was not supriseing that Phil would not want to share this information with us. He was always a positive, upbeat, and cheerful person and I'm sure remained so to the end, and wouldn't want to burden us with his diagnosis. Rest in peace my good friend!
